In case you missed it in person, check out the video recording of the Fall 2019 SJSU Lurie College of Education Commencement Ceremony and of the Lurie College Student Commencement Speaker, Megan Nebesnick – MA, Education, Concentration in Curriculum and Instruction with Multiple Subject Credential – below!  You can also read her remarks below.

Good evening Spartans,

My name is Megan Nebesnick and as a current graduate of the Teacher Education Department and former graduate of the Humanities Department, I am honored to have been chosen as your speaker of our Fall 2019 commencement ceremony to represent and speak on behalf of both departments. I would like to begin by congratulating each and every one of us for the dedication and commitment to academics that have led us here tonight. Through our experiences here at San Jose State, we have created stronger and better versions of ourselves.  It’s safe to say that this journey has not been easy. We have encountered many sleepless nights, tears, and stress. We have all dedicated a significant amount of time and concern toward one exam or project that would bring us one small but significant step closer to the finish line. Nonetheless, it has prepared us for what is to come.

San Jose State new grad breaking barriers on race track

This story was originally published on ktvu.com by

Fall commencement ceremonies were held at San Jose State University on Wednesday night. Among the graduates is a 22-year-old who is breaking barriers outside the classroom and on the race track.

This is the day years in the making for Jianna Salinas to accept her diploma from San Jose State University earning a bachelor’s degree in early childhood development.

“I’m very excited,” said Salinas. “I’ve worked very hard for this for four and half years to finally be here in this building. It’s very surreal.”

It’s a dream come true for the San Jose native, who is a first generation student. Her parents could not afford college.

“Education is something they instilled in my sisters and I in a very young age,” said Salinas.

You may be surprised to learn she’s a professional motorcycle drag racer.

Lurie College of Education Dean Heather Lattimer’s new formula for preparing math teachers is transforming the careers of educators and increasing equity in classrooms.

Robyn Riedstra remembers the day she gave up learning math. Stumped by fractions in third grade, she asked her mother for help. Her mother asked repeatedly if she’d understood the concept in class and, if so, what was different at home. Riedstra interpreted the response to mean that she wasn’t smart. She stopped doing her homework—math, English, science, everything—altogether. She was eight years old.

How We Recruit High School and Community College Students to Teaching

Shoutout to Lurie College of Education Student Success Center Director Janene Perez, who was recently featured on the California State University’s Diversity Toolkit blog for highlighting some of the ways in which Lurie College has enhanced its efforts to recruit a diverse range of teaching candidates.  Listen to and read what she had to say below!

SJSU Lurie College of Education Director Janene Perez Podcast

Teacher educators, consider your own journey into education.  Did you come from a family of educators?  Or maybe you had a teacher who left an indelible mark that influenced your decision?  These are inspired reasons to enter the field, but how do we reach those who never considered teaching, who may be the first in their family to attend college, or who didn’t have a teacher they connected with?  Recruiting candidates with a diversity of experiences is absolutely vital to our mission of enhancing the quality of education for all students, but this work takes time, intention, and continuous reflection.

San Jose, Calif. — About 100 Silicon Valley thought leaders, policymakers and K-12 educators filled SJSU’s Diaz Compean Student Union Theater November 13 at the inaugural Future of Learning Summit, hosted by the Connie L. Lurie College of Education. The event included five keynote speakers and talks by five SJSU community members, all of whom addressed the question, “What is the future of learning?”

“We’re at a time of significant change in education and across society,” said Heather Lattimer, dean of the Lurie College. “We have changing job markets, demographic shifts and new understandings around what learning and cognition mean and look like. It’s a time of rapid change that can be really scary. But it’s also an opportunity for all of us to challenge the way that we think of education and schooling to find new ways to support stronger, more equitable and more relevant outcomes.” Lattimer described SJSU’s upcoming Future of Learning Initiative, a cross-disciplinary program to spur innovation on campus, serve as a hub for transforming education in the region, generate new knowledge that will elevate the importance of the scholarship of teaching and learning, and position SJSU as a thought leader in the field of educational innovation.

“Education has always played an important role in my life. Since I began volunteering with teachers at ten years old, I become a regular volunteer with a first grade teacher at my elementary school. As I got older she allowed me to teach her class a few times which was when I knew that I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. Here at SJSU I have found many resources and opportunities to achieve that goal and the encouragement to reach my long-term goal of becoming Secretary of Education.”
