SJSU Faces of Learning Project: Episode 1

The Faces of Learning Project is an arts-based research initiative designed to elicit student voices to provide insights into learning experiences at SJSU.  Meet some of the project’s co-researchers – Leeza Xiong, Edith Urbano, and Isabel Rangel Hernandez – as they begin to delve into the art of interviewing to gather learning stories from peers and utilizing photography to communicate those stories.  Project Coordinator Briettny Curtner tells us where she sees the project heading, and how she hopes it will change the student narrative on campus.  Faces of Learning is part of the SJSU Lurie College of Education’s Future of Learning Initiative – learn more about the initiative at sjsu.edu/education/fli

Meet the Lurie College Student Organizations | ChAD Club

The ChAD club is a student-run organization that is open to all interested students, alumni, and faculty in the Child & Adolescent Development department to learn about careers in ChAD, support children and adolescents in the community, and plan fun social events with your peers!  Spring semester meetings will take place on the first and third Thursday of each month from 1:15-2:15 in Sweeney Hall 212.  Visit the ChAD department website, Instagram feed, or the club Facebook group to find out more information.

Apply for the SJSU and CSU Student Research Competition!

SJSU Lurie College of Education Learning Showcase Melody Mann

The SJSU Office of Research in partnership with the SJSU Research Foundation provides undergraduate and graduate research students the opportunity to present their work and compete for selection as SJSU representatives at the annual CSU Student Research Competition. The research presented should be appropriate to the student’s discipline and career goals. Proprietary research is excluded. Each college may send forward a total of four student projects (undergraduate and/or graduate) representing outstanding research or creative activity to the university-wide competition.

To apply, please complete this PDF form and submit it by 5pm on Friday, February 7, to the SJSU Lurie College of Education Dean’s Office in Sweeney Hall 103 or at luriecollege@sjsu.edu. Lurie College Student Publishes 2nd Edition of Book

Shoutout to SJSU Lurie College student Aiden Hill, whose second edition of his book, The Midnight Stranglers, was recently published!  Here’s a synopsis:
.
In 2008 Aiden Hill was diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition-severe obstructive sleep apnea, also known as “the midnight strangler.” But after he lost his employer-based insurance he soon encountered a new group of “health care stranglers.” These special interests were bent on using the cover of darkness to deny coverage and gouge him while he was at his most vulnerable. Part One of The Midnight Stranglers: a Personal Quest for Health Care Transparency chronicles this struggle, its intersection with the passage of Obamacare, and the Tea Party reaction. Aiden was so scarred by his experience that he joined the health care reform movement to help bring about change. Part Two discusses the disappointments he encountered as he worked for the State of California to implement its version of Obamacare (Covered California), and why he now believes the insurance exchanges won’t deliver affordable care. The book ends with a call for greater transparency across the entire health care spectrum, and what we as individual consumers and taxpayers can do to make it happen.
