ISSSSC Research Fair Participation Opportunity – Oct. 15

During the week of Oct. 15, SJSU will celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the 1968 Olympic Project for Human Rights, now commemorated by our Smith/Carlos statues.

As part of this celebration, the University invites you to present a poster at the SJSU ISSSSC Inaugural Research Fair (Monday Oct. 15, 8:00-11:30 in the SU Ballroom). What you’ll do:

1. Read The John Carlos Story (available at the SJSU Bookstore, on reserve at MLK Library,
as an ebook for less than $9, or as a used hard copy for $4-$5).
2. Describe three points of engagement or meaningfulness you found in this book.
3. Describe three research studies you might conduct based on your personal book-related
takeaways, OR state three ways that you will attempt to "take a stand" in your own
lives.
4. Using your ideas from points 2 and 3 above, create a poster using the attached template. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to speak to a large group! Just stand next to your poster in the Ballroom on Oct. 15 and answer questions from faculty and students passing by.)

This is a great opportunity to help celebrate our University’s heritage of social activism. It will also look GREAT on your C.V. and LinkedIn profile.

All participants will get a certificate signed by SJSU President Papazian, Dr. Harry Edwards, and Dr. Ted Butryn (ISSSSC Founding Director and KIN Professor).

In addition, the Research Fair will commence at 8:00am with a Keynote address by Marques R. Dexter, a 3 rd year Ph.D. student in the Sport Management & Policy program at the University of Georgia. Mr. Dexter will connect the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Olympic protest with the current wave of athlete activism in a paper entitled Activism: A Gateway to Stand up for Humanity.

If interested, please contact Dr. Butryn, theodore.butryn@sjsu.edu, by Wednesday September 12 at the LATEST so that you can be added to the Canvas Site!

Self-Defense Workshops for SJSU Students

Congrats to Dr. Gong Chen, professor from Department of Kinesiology at CHaHS, provided a self-defense workshop for Sigma Alpha Zeta on August 29, 2018.

About 20 female students participated in the workshop. Students learned key mental strategies on preventing violent crimes and had hands-on experience defending themselves at different physical attacks.

Dr. Chen has been conducting research and lectures on self-defense education as a different perspective on enhancing health and wellness.
