2014 MBI Undergraduate Summer Research Program

June 2 – August 15, 2014

This program introduces students to exciting new areas of mathematical biology and  involves them in collaborative research with their peers and faculty mentors. The program consists of three parts – each with a mix of educational and social experiences:

  • Two-week Introduction (June 2-13, 2014): Tutorials, computer labs, and team efforts designed to introduce students to a variety of topics in mathematical biology.
  • Eight-week REU Program (June 16-August 8, 2014): An individualized research experience as part of a research team at a participating  institution. There are 14 projects to choose from.
  • Capstone Conference (August 11-15, 2014): A student centered conference featuring talks and posters by student researchers in math biology, keynotes by prominent math biologists, and a graduate studies recruitment fair.

Apply for the REU program

A complete application will require:

  • Two letters of reference
  • A ranked list of the three projects that you want to participate in (see above)
  • A statement indicating your reasons for wanting to participate in this program

For full consideration, completed applications must be received by Monday, January 27, 2014.

Applications for the TWO-WEEK INTRODUCTION ONLY will be due in April.

Applications for the CAPSTONE CONFERENCE ONLY will be due in June.

Summer 2014 REU at San Diego State Univeristy

This eight-week summer program, supported by the National Science Foundation, aims to give its participants a clear understanding of the world of mathematics, primarily through firsthand experience. The dates of the 2014 program are  June 15-August 9. Participants are grouped into research teams, led by a graduate student and the program director, and given added training by several experts. Teams engage in original research, of significant interest and potential impact. Participants receive a generous stipend ($5000 for undergraduates), room and partial board.  The application deadline is March 3. 2014 Project: Arithmetic of Numerical Semigroups

The general area of study will be Number Theory, specifically Numerical Semigroups. A numerical semigroup is an additively closed subset of the nonnegative integers, such as {0,3,5,6,8,9,10,11,…}. We are concerned with arithmetic properties, such as what the irreducible elements are (3,5 in this example).

Summer Reasearch Opportunities for Pure and Applied Mathematics

UCLA Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS)

The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) runs a unique summer program for undergraduate students. The Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS) provides an opportunity for exceptional students in math and related disciplines to work in teams on real world research projects proposed by a sponsor from industry or a national lab. Sponsors have included Pixar, Microsoft, Symantec, Los Alamos, the Aerospace Corporation, Amgen, Arete, IBM, Standard & Poor’s, Jet Propulsion Lab, and many others. The RIPS web site gives the full details including a link to the online application. We encourage all bright, young students to apply, especially women and minorities.

This is an educational and very exciting two month program near the heart of Los Angeles at one of the premiere educational institutions in the United States. If accepted the program covers the student’s travel, housing and most meals, and offers a generous stipend. Students immerse themselves in research and learn how to deal with real world problems.

RIPS-Hong Kong

In addition to RIPS in Los Angeles, IPAM will offer RIPS-Hong Kong in 2014 in partnership with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  This is an exciting opportunity for U.S. undergrads to work with students from Hong Kong / China on projects sponsored by companies based in the region.  English is the only language required for participation.  The format is the same as RIPS-LA; two American and two Chinese students will form a team.
