The time is now for strong federal support of higher education

On Friday, I wrote letters to five key U.S. Senators, including Senators Feinstein and Harris, to request their urgently-needed support for San Jose State University and the entire California State University (CSU) system as we continue to come to grips with the devastating effects our institution faces due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have since written to several House members as well. Specifically, we are asking legislators to support higher education in the third economic relief package now being negotiated.

IMPORTANT UPDATES: Classes Moving to Remote Modalities

Sadly, a resident of Santa Clara County died earlier today from the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The Santa Clara County Public Health Department has confirmed 37 cases at the time of this email. This number will escalate as more people report and are tested. After consulting with California State University System Chancellor Tim White and a variety of other leaders representing our unions, the Academic Senate, and the student body, I have made decisions regarding in-person classes.

“Super Tuesday” serves as a reminder of our civic responsibility and democratic principles

Today is “Super Tuesday.”That is the name political pundits have given, of course, to the day when Californians and voters from 15 other states go to the polls to participate in the Presidential Primary Election. There are many other important local and regional races and issues for which we are casting ballots, too. At San Jose State, this has been an exciting and important period for our democracy.

SJSU’s role in the continued development of downtown San Jose

As I prepare for a panel discussion taking place later this week about the future of downtown San Jose, it seems fitting to share an op-ed piece I wrote for the San Francisco Chronicle in November. Though the piece lays out the ways in which San Jose State can assist Google with its downtown San Jose development project, the ideas are applicable beyond that particular effort.
