Civic responsibility is a vital part of our academic mission

What a busy but productive summer it has been thus far! My recent travel schedule has led to a brief pause in my blogging schedule, but I am looking forward to a full resumption as we approach next month’s Fall Welcome and the start of the new academic season.

ISB groundbreaking jumpstarts transformative era in SJSU science and research

On a gorgeous, sunny morning last Thursday, San Jose State broke ground on its Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB), a state-of-the-art facility that is sure to transform our campus when occupancy begins in just a few years.

Environment, sustainability issues to frame Earth Day activities at SJSU

Earth Day 2019—and the various activities we have planned at SJSU this month to celebrate and acknowledge this important day—reminds me, as it should all of us, that sustainability remains one of the big issues of our time. San Jose State continues to be an innovative leader in this area, particularly in our buildings and facilities, but also in our academic programs and co-curricular initiatives led by our Division of Student Affairs.

Paving the way for the next generation of Latino and Latina activists

As those of us at San José State know, this is a big anniversary year for our campus. In October, we welcomed an impressive lineup of activists, athletes, journalists, and academics for a series of panel discussions related to human rights. In large part, we were celebrating the two remarkable San José State athletes whose courageous actions thrust themselves not only across the finish line, but into the forefront of athlete activism back during the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. But there is a lesser known – though no less important – anniversary we also are observing this year, as we celebrate 50 years since Chicano and Chicana activists throughout San José and Santa Clara County began to demand social justice for the Latino community.

Student success and resource centers offer myriad ways to get involved

Recently, I had the privilege to attend and offer welcome remarks at the official Grand Opening of SJSU’s newest Student Success and Resource Centers. For years, we have offered college success centers where students can receive academic advising for their major areas of study or for general education. But more recently, we created three culturally-relevant centers to provide more targeted services to our Chicanx/Latinx, African-American/Black, and undocumented – or “UndocuSpartan” – student populations.
