Recently, I attended the Fall Conference of the American Council on Education (ACE) Women’s Network of Northern California, an organization I joined a couple of years ago as a presidential sponsor. I am delighted to know that our campus will host this conference next October!

Welcome SJSU’s first Vice President for Research and Innovation, Mohamed Abousalem

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mohamed Abousalem as our inaugural vice president for research and innovation (VPRI). Mohamed has served in a variety of teaching, research and leadership positions for three decades, most recently serving as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of California-Santa Cruz. He will join us at San Jose State University on June 10, 2019.

As I consider the many aspects of leadership that I find important in my position as president of San Jose State, I am reminded of a simple phrase by educator and author Steven W. Anderson that sums up a vital element of my overall leadership approach: “Alone we are smart. Together we are brilliant.” Truer words may never have been spoken about the importance of team-building
