The time is now for strong federal support of higher education

On Friday, I wrote letters to five key U.S. Senators, including Senators Feinstein and Harris, to request their urgently-needed support for San Jose State University and the entire California State University (CSU) system as we continue to come to grips with the devastating effects our institution faces due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have since written to several House members as well. Specifically, we are asking legislators to support higher education in the third economic relief package now being negotiated.

SJSU Response to County Shelter In Place Order

The shelter in place mandate calls for county residents to stay inside their homes and away from others in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and to only leave for essential reasons.

“Cluster Hire” at SJSU expected to lead to deeper focus on wildfire science

One of the exciting things we are doing this year at San Jose State to build academic strength and expertise is what we call a Cluster Hire, or in this case, more specifically, a Cluster Hire in Wildfire Science. With the recent wildfires that have devastated our natural ecosystems and our local communities in California, this could not be a more timely and urgent intervention into our hiring process.

New experimental economics lab doesn’t just play games

I recently attended a ribbon-cutting event celebrating SJSU’s new experimental economics facility, known as the Spartan Experimental Economics Lab (SEEL). I very much enjoyed speaking with such a venerable group of economists—including Nobel Laureate Dr. Vernon Smith, who shared the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics Sciences for his contributions to Behavior Economics—and it was even more exciting to think about how this new lab will elevate San Jose State’s stature in the fast-growing experimental economics field.
