SJSU IT Tips – Accelerate Your Research with HPC

Campus Community,

Want to accelerate your big data, AI, or Machine Learning research and power past computation roadblocks?

Here’s a tip for you: SJSU IT has collaborated with the College of Engineering and College of Science to build a robust High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure to accelerate research. SJSU IT has a dedicated HPC administrator to support you – spend more time building data models and less time troubleshooting. If you’re interested in accessing HPC resources for your research, simply Open a Help Ticket and enter “HPC” as your reason for submitting. We’ll work with you to design a solution that meets your HPC needs.

Advanced research is already happening on campus thanks to the power of HPC, including the Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center’s wildfire science data and modeling. HPC supports some of the most compute- and memory-intensive programs developed today, and it might be able to accelerate your work, too. See what HPC can do for you – submit a ticket today.

Thank you, Tien Tran, our HPC administrator, and Keith Nowosielski, IT Systems Specialist, for managing HPC environments and providing this tip to campus. As always, the SJSU IT Service Desk is here to help by phone at (408) 924-1530 or online.

SJSU IT Tips – eduroam

Campus Community,

Managing guest WiFi networks every time you visit another university or community college adds one more barrier to collaborating with research partners, scouting grad schools, or visiting and colleagues. Here’s a tip to make your life easier: Because SJSU is part of eduroam, you can use your SJSU login and password to join WiFi at thousands of higher education institutions around the world.

Eduroam is an international roaming service that has thousands of participating universities, libraries, and other learning institutions, including over 2,000 participating networks across the United States, with many throughout the SF Bay Area and California. Students, faculty, and staff can connect to a secure network in many major cities worldwide using their SJSU login with eduroam.

Use this interactive map to find eduroam networks, either where you are or where you’re going. To navigate the map, select the continent, then region, then zoom to the location where you want to look. When connecting to eduroam WiFi, select the network named “eduroam” and use your SJSU email address and password to login – simple!

Thank you Rong Wang, our Network Analyst, for supporting our campus community and providing these tips. As always, the SJSU IT Service Desk is here to help by phone at (408) 924-1530 or online.

Passover & Easter Holidays

Colleagues,

This year, the Jewish holiday Passover (also called Pesach or חַג הַפֶּסַח), lasts from April 5 to April 13. Celebrating the escape of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, Passover brings in the start of Spring with Matzah, songs, and family. The stories and traditions of Passover acknowledge the liberation and freedom of the Jewish people.

For more information about Passover, visit https://www.ifcj.org/learn/jewish-holidays/what-is-passover.

Coinciding with Passover, the Christian Holiday of Easter ( also called Pascha or Resurrection Sunday) on April 9 is a spring festival commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The gifting and decorating of eggs now associated with Easter has been a springtime tradition throughout written human history. Early Christians in Mesopotamia dyed eggs in the period after Easter, a practice that was adopted and spread, as eggs represent new life and rebirth. In the UK, Pace Eggs are rolled down hills in childrens’ races.

Learn more about the history of Easter at https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/history-of-easter.

Cybersecurity Resources for Tax Season

Campus community,

April is a prime month on the calendar for cyber criminals as they exploit tax season, looking to phish your accounts or trick you into installing ransomware. Cyber attackers aren’t only after money, either. They’re targeting the influence and ideology of the university community. It’s more important than ever to stay vigilant and protect yourself and your privacy.

Here’s some helpful reminders that can keep you safe online:

  • Look out for mobile phone-based spearphishing attacks like smishing and vishing. Attackers impersonate people you know, like your boss or an old friend, and ask for a quick callback or text. Sometimes even a simple reply or clicked link is enough for attackers to gain access.
  • Know how to spot and report common phishing attempts. An SJSU employee will never ask you for your login information or your password, regardless how legitimate the email, phone texts, or chat messages may appear.
  • The best way to protect yourself and your data from ransomware is to have reliable, cloud backups.

SJSU IT offers resources to secure your home devices:

Our SJSU IT Cybersecurity & Safe Computing website has many more helpful tips. If you know or suspect you’ve been the victim of a cyber attack, don’t hesitate – report it quickly to our IT Information Security team by email at security@sjsu.edu or by phone at 408-924-1705 so we can help.

Thank you,

SJSU IT Tips – Bringing Duo to a New Device

Spartans,

If you switch mobile devices often, lost yours, or are thinking of getting a new one, here’s a tip on transferring your Duo Multi-Factor Authentication: backing up and restoring your Duo account makes moving between devices easy.

  • Make sure you are running the latest version of the Duo Mobile App on your current mobile device.
  • For iPhones and iPads, backup your device to iCloud with iCloud Keychain enabled and Duo’s Instant Restore feature will move your authenticator to your new device. Here’s a walkthrough on how to set it up
  • On Android devices, enable Duo Restore in the Duo Mobile app settings. Just make sure you backup to the personal Google Account you used to activate your mobile device and you can restore your Duo settings from that same account on your new device. Here’s a full guide on how to set it up

If those options don’t work for you, or you forget to backup before you switch, don’t worry: the SJSU IT Service Desk is here to help. Resetting your Duo account so you can set it up on your new device is easy and only takes a few minutes. You can call the SJSU IT Service Desk by phone at (408) 924-1530, schedule a virtual appointment online, or visit in person on the first floor of Clark Hall (take a right when you walk in the front doors).

Thank you Sharon Watkins, our Lead Service Desk Support Specialist, for supporting our campus community and providing this tip.
