1/24-26/14 – The SJSU Learning & Games Consortium (LGC) is hosting the Global Game Jam, starting @ 5:00 PM. This event, which can be thought of as a hackathon focused on game development, is the largest of its kind in the world. Bringing together jammers from different disciplines to collaboratively create games with global themes, the GGJ is open to students from all majors. Global Awareness | Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
1/20/14 – The Society of Women Engineers at SJSU has been hosting monthly events to promote Global Awareness about critical global topics during the year, led by SWE President Carissa Labriola (2013 Salzburg Scholar | Senior – Computer Engineering). The group hosted a session on Human Rights Violations Against Women in October 2013, which included a showing of the video Half the Sky. It also hosted a session on the Privatization of Water in November 2013, which included a talk on water issues in Brazil by a foreign exchange student and the distribution of reusable water bottles donated by Intel and the US Navy. Global Citizenship | Alumni Association
1/20/14 – Erin Enguero (2013 Salzburg Scholar | Junior – Kinesiology) gave a presentation on Global Citizenship to the Board of the SJSU Alumni Association last November (11/23/13), describing her experience at the Salzburg Global Seminar last summer and her projects this year to help globalize the university.
Fellowship | Kellogg Foundation
1/10/14 – The W. K. Kellogg Foundation has announced a major new fellowship program, the WKKF Community Leadership Network, and is seeking applicants who are interested in developing their leadership skills to become community-based social change agents working to help vulnerable children and their families achieve optimal health and well-being through better access to good food, academic achievement, and financial security. WWKF will select a total of 100 fellows from 4 states that are priority places for the foundation – Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico and New Orleans. It will also select an additional 20 fellows from outside these states who will function as a national cohort focusing on racial healing and equity, which sets it apart from most other leadership initiatives. The foundation will seek emerging as well as established leaders for selection to the program. Electronic applications are due no later than 1/10/14 @ 11:59 PM (EST). Steinbeck Award | Ken Burns
12/6/13 – Join KQED, Student Union, Inc., and the Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University for a special evening as Ken Burns accepts the John Steinbeck Award and sits down for an on-stage conversation with Michael Krasny. Plus see a sneak peek of his upcoming documentary The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, airing in 2014. Authorized by the Steinbeck estate, the John Steinbeck Award, “in the souls of the people,” is presented to artists and activists whose works exemplify the spirit of Steinbeck’s social engagement.
