Dear Campus Community,

The terrible Camp Fire to our north, near Chico, and the Woolsey and Hill Fires, west of Los Angeles and in Ventura County, have wreaked havoc and devastation on those communities.

Many of us have friends, family, or colleagues who are directly impacted. The sadness and misery that have fallen upon these communities are unlike anything we can imagine. We are all broken-hearted.

Coming on the heels of more mass shootings, the suffering and anguish are more than any community should have to endure.

It is only natural – and human – that members of the SJSU community will want to help the victims of the California fires. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to offer assistance. Though recovery will be a long, hard road, we can have a positive impact, both personally and collectively, and help in meaningful ways.

Chico State has established the Wildcats Rise Fire Recovery Fund to support students, faculty, and staff impacted by the Camp Fire. Those wishing to support the effort can also text WildcatsRise74 to 71777.

At CSU-Channel Islands, a special disaster relief fund has been established under the Ekho Your Heart Program to assist CSUCI students, staff, and faculty in their recovery efforts.

On Sunday, the New York Times published a comprehensive article that outlines the ways in which people can help those affected by the California fires. I would encourage anyone who is so inclined to review the many options.

Here at SJSU, we offer resources including counseling and psychological services and our Employee Assistance Program to students and employees who need them.

As we look ahead to the Thanksgiving holiday and time with family and loved ones, we keep those impacted by the California fires close in our hearts and thoughts.
