SJSU broadcast grads take regional awards

Devin Fehely, a graduate of San José State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication is the winner of a 2014 Edward R. Murrow regional award for use of sound and video for his work at NBC- affiliate WXIA in Atlanta in the category of large market television. His station took home six other awards for this year’s competition.

Fehely has been part of the 11Alive news team since January 2011, according to a bio post of the broadcast station’s website. He has contributed to special reports on topics such as the rise of synthetic drug use in Georgia, potential racial bias and police misconduct in the investigation of an armed robbery.

Fehely won an individual Emmy award in 2013 from the Southeast chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for best general assignment report. He has also received two “Salute to Excellence Awards” from the National Association of Black Journalists for best general assignment report and best investigative report. He received an award of merit for best news story from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters for his report on synthetic drug use.

As a student in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts, JMC Director Bob Rucker said Fehely  worked for the Spartan Daily and Update News.

Another graduate, Jane McMillian, was honored with an Edward R. Murrow regional award along with the KCBS radio team in San Francisco. The team won for best newscast in its category, large market radio, in Region 2, which includes California. McMillian is a newsroom executive and an on-air anchor with KCBS. She taught radio news in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Also from the SJSU School of Journalism and Mass Communications, student Ashley Madigan has been offered a position as a producer/researcher with an investigative unit at an ABC affiliate in Austin, Texas upon graduation.

CASA students take homecoming crowns as first African-American couple selected

Two students enrolled in San José State University’s College of Applied Sciences and Arts programs were crowned as homecoming king and queen Thursday night. Daniel Harris-Lucas is a public relations student with the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Diana Busaka is a student in Occupational Therapy.

The two were touted as being historic because it is the first time in the history of the school that an African-American couple has been selected as homecoming king and queen. The two are pictured in their royal garb in a report by NBC Bay Area news, along with an article about the historic crowning.

The article quotes SJSU journalism professor Dona Nichols as saying while there has been an African-American homecoming queen in the past, this is the first time a couple has been selected.
