Health Science MPH Student Alexis Fields Recipient of AAPHP’s Community Engaged Research Scholarship

by Edward Mamary

I am pleased to announce that Alexis Fields is the recipient of a Community Engaged Research Scholarship awarded by the Association of Accredited Public Health Programs.   As Alexis’s faculty sponsor, I am so proud of her achievement – she is one of two national recipients of the award!

She is proposing an innovative research project during a time that just happens to coincide with our Health Science Department’s merger with the Department of Recreation. Her MPH graduate project will be the first in our newly merged department (Health Science and Recreation) that values the role of nature and recreation, and their combined contribution to enhancing health of communities. Her qualitative research project aims to increase our understanding of the roles of physical activity, outdoor space, and health from the unique perspective of adolescent minority girls living in an urban environment.

The results of her research will help to inform policies that promote recreational activity in parks, with the ultimate goal of addressing the obesity epidemic among our minority youth.  Please join me in congratulating Alexis Fields.

ASIS&T Student Chapter at SJSU SLIS Wins Professional Association’s 2012 Student Chapter of the Year Award

by SLIS

Congratulations to the ASIS&T Student Chapter at SJSU SLIS who recently won a national student group award. The student group has journeyed from establishing the chapter’s charter just a year ago to receiving recognition as the professional association’s 2012 Student Chapter of the Year. Incredible growth in the space of year highlights the continued dedication of CASA faculty and students.

“I was thrilled to learn that our student chapter won this national award, especially during its first year of existence” said Sarah Emmerson, who was the chair of the newly established student chapter. “We hit the ground running in August 2011 to make a success of the student chapter from its beginning.”

Please join us in celebrating their accomplishments and take a second to note the positive work our students continue to do in the community and the nationwide.  This is just one example of the groundbreaking work being done in SLIS.

CASA Faculty Grant Awards Highlight SJSU Research Foundation October 2012 Release

by Staff

Some exciting news was recently released from the SJSU COO’s office regarding CASA faculty contract and grant rewards submitted by the SJSU Research Foundation.

A university-wide summary of the October 2012 report for contract and grant awards received and proposals submitted by the SJSU Research Foundation reflects that:

  • Awards – 29 new awards were received for a total of $4,744,192.
  • Proposals – 28 proposals requesting a total of $2,884,560 were submitted to sponsoring agencies.

In particular, CASA awards almost doubled in the past year (from 2011 – 2012 to 2012-2013) with awards reaching $2,530,063; representing a 76.7% increase in awards over the past year to the tune of $1,096,368. CASA proposals are also up in 2012-2013, with an 8% increase in proposals, up $161,403 from the previous year.

In particular, we would like to highlight the effort, skill, and dedication of the following CASA faculty who have received grants this past month.

Congratulations to the faculty and students who received grants and awards, and good luck to the faculty and students who are seeking grants and contracts. The increase in grant awards has occurred due to the hard work of faculty, and has also occurred due to the groundwork laid by CARHS and CASA to increase proposals and awards.

CASA is dedicated to the development of new research and providing the resources and time needed for faculty to pursue research paths that help in our efforts to transform SJSU and our communities.
