JMC students net 11 awards

The student news staff of the Spartan Daily took home nine awards on March 1 at the California College Media Association’s Annual Awards Banquet, while advertising students also took home awards from a professional competition. The daily newspaper, with its accompanying website, covers news at San José State University. The news enterprise is part of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts’ School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Newspaper editors Stephanie Wong and Christiana Cobb took first place for Best Special Section for an edition that covered all things food. Leeta-Rose Ballester received an award for a story on a family of farmworkers in the same edition.

Spartan Daily photographers also took home multiple awards. Raphael Kluniok received first place for best sports photo and third place for best news photo. Codi Mills took home a second place award for best photo series and third place for best sports photo while Carolyn Seng took a second place award for best features photo. The newspaper received a third place award for best overall design while the ad staff took first and third for color ad and promotional campaign.

In addition, advertising students also won awards at a professional advertising award. Chris Phillips won gold and silver place for radio in Silicon Valley’s American Advertising Federation American Advertising Awards competition in the student category.
