Bertha Kalm Scholarship for SJSU Graduate Students Announced

by SJSU Graduate Studies and Research

We are pleased to announce the availability of the Bertha Kalm Scholarship for graduate students at SJSU.  This award has been made possible by a generous gift from a donor.  The Graduate Studies & Research Committee has been asked to administer the award.

Awards of $500 are restricted to first year students in master’s degree programs at SJSU.  Graduate advisors/student mentors are invited to send forward the name and supporting information of an applicant who began the program in Fall 2012 or Spring 2013.  Applicants will be evaluated on the quality of scholarship that established eligibility for admission to graduate school, a personal statement regarding goals to be achieved by the master’s degree, and faculty assessment of potential success.  Additional consideration will be given to applicants with financial need.  There will be a maximum of one award per department or school, and the campus as a whole generally has sufficient funding to award only one or two of the scholarships annually.

The student mentor should supply copies of:

1) the application downloaded from http://www.sjsu.edu/gradstudies/docs/10-06-10_Bertha_Kalm_Scholarship_App_xfillablex.pdf, filled out and signed by the student,

2) the student’s undergraduate transcript and transcripts of any post-graduate work including in the master’s program at SJSU (unofficial okay in both cases),

3) the student’s personal statement regarding goals to be achieved by the master’s degree (entered on the application above),

4) the mentor’s statement about the student’s potential for success in a cover letter announcing the submission of the application,

5) the completed (by the student) Permission to Publish form available on the GS&R website at http://www.sjsu.edu/gradstudies/docs/Permission_to_Publish.pdf.  The mentor should then send the package to the Office of GS&R.

These materials are due in the Graduate Studies & Research Office (ADM 223B) no later than Monday, May 6, 2013.  The award will be announced during the week of May 20, 2013.
