’50s

Richard Jones, ’55 BA English, ’58 MA Education, is currently serving as the interim chancellor of Southern California’s Coast Community College District. During his more than 50 years’ service in higher education, he has also served as chancellor of the San Bernardino Community College District, interim president of Columbia College in Sonora, interim president/superintendent of Barstow Community College District and interim superintendent of the Palomar Community College District.

James McGaugh, ’53 Psychology, neurobiology and behavior research professor at UC Irvine, received the 2015 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Psychology in recognition of his research regarding the effect of stress hormones on the vividness of our memories. McGaugh’s discoveries have “transformed the field,” according to the University of Louisville’s Woody Petry. McGaugh’s work, he said, “has profound implications for helping us understand and treat memory disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder.” McGaugh first began studying emotion and memory in the 1960s.

Ignacio Mendez, ’56 Engineering, who retired from Lockheed Missiles and Space Company as a reliability engineer in 1993, reports that he and wife Emily Livsey Tranberg, ’67 Sociology, are currently “cruising the East Coast and the Bahamas,” after sailing around the world in their Cal 3-46 sailboat between 1995 and 2000.

Doreen Gandy Wiley, ’50 English, published a new collection of poems and photographs, A River Widens (Celilo Publications).

 


’60s

Rod Diridon Sr., ’62 Finance, ’64 MBA, emeritus executive director of the Mineta Transportation Institute, was inducted into the American Public Transportation Association Hall of Fame. Diridon has chaired the California High Speed Rail Authority Board and received other lifetime achievement awards from the National Council of University Transportation Centers, the U.S. High Speed Rail Association and SJSU’s College of Business.

William Fenical, ’65 MS Biochemistry, founder of the Scripps Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine, received the 2014 Distinguished Scientist Award from the San Diego branch of the American Chemical Society. Fenical and his team explore the oceans for compounds that could be developed into disease-fighting medications, including cancer. A native of Chicago, he first bonded with the ocean on childhood trips to Florida.

Jonathan London, ’69 BA, ’70 MA, Social Science, the author of more than 100 picture books for children, published the 25th book in his most famous series in March: Froggy’s Birthday Wish (Viking Books for Young Readers). Inspired by stories he shared with his two young sons, London began publishing the Froggy series in 1992. First title: Froggy Gets Dressed.

Donald Ohannes, ’61 Business/Industrial Management, retired as an Allstate Insurance Company investment director. He is currently consulting on project financing and serving as a policy advisor for the Heartland Institute, a Chicago-based nonprofit that discovers, develops, and promotes free-market solutions to social and economic problems.

Randy Tyler, ’69 Music, ’70 Teaching Credential, retired from Bernal Intermediate School in San Jose’s Oak Grove School District after a 41-year teaching career. He started “Big Band Bash,” the “Gym Jam” and many other innovative programs during his four decades at Bernal.

 


’70s

David Burckhard, ’79 Journalism, received an Innovations for Entrepreneurs Award on behalf of his company, PicturePoint On-line, a San Jose-based media production firm. The national award, sponsored by Comcast Business and Inc. magazine, honors small businesses that leverage technology to enhance the employee/customer experience.

Bernard Duffy, ’70 Speech Communication, professor and chair of California Polytechnic State University’s Department of Communication Studies, received the university’s Distinguished Scholarship Award.

Rudy Guevara, ’78 Kinesiology, SJSU’s assistant wrestling coach from 1978 to 1985, was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Service Award on May 2 at an awards banquet at Menlo College in Atherton. He taught and coached in the East Side Union High School District from 1981 to 2004 and during his career served for many years as head coach of USA San Jose Wrestling Club and the California Junior Olympics National Team.

Glenn “Willie” Harmatz, ’75 Kinesiology, was inducted into the Long Beach City College Hall of Fame. He ran track at Long Beach City College and at SJSU, competing in the World Maccabiah Games, and served for 25 years as the track and cross country coach at Los Gatos High School.

Russell Kaldenberg, ’71 Anthropology, retired as China Lake Navel Air Weapons Base’s base archaeologist and currently works as a consultant with ASM Affiliates in Cheyenne, Wyo. He also serves on the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association’s board of directors.

Jayne Ann Castle Krentz, ’71 MLS, a bestselling author with more than 35 million copies of her novels in print, published Trust No One (G.P. Putnam’s Sons) in January. Credited with pushing the boundaries of the romance novel as well as creating a “futuristic romance subgenre,” she writes under seven different names. Her latest, (written as Jayne Ann Krentz), earned another starred review from Kirkus: “Krentz never disappoints, and this title shines…an intriguing, textured mystery that perfectly layers humor, suspense and romance.”

Dale Laitinen, ’75 Art, exhibited his oil and watercolor paintings at the Kings Art Center in Hanford in January. He is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West.

Andre Lower, ’78 Business, reports that he published his third book on baseball, Earned Wins (CreateSpace, 2015). baseballbypositions.com.

Barbara Marquez, ’77 BA Biology, ’83 MPH, is deputy director of California’s Office of the Patient Advocate. She has held previous leadership positions in the Department of Mental Health, the Department of Health Services and First 5 California.

Connie Moore, ’77 Business Administration, was elected to the board of directors of BRIDGE Housing, a nonprofit developer, owner and manager of affordable housing. She was previously president/CEO of BRE Properties and currently chairs the policy advisory board of UC Berkeley’s Fisher Center for Real Estate & Urban Economics. She is also a member of SJSU’s Tower Foundation board.

Sam Piraro, ’75 Physical Education, who retired after 25 years as SJSU’s head baseball coach, currently teaches part time and coaches baseball at Willow Glen High School.

Don Smith, ’70 Economics, associate professor of finance at the School of Management, Boston University, published the second edition of Bond Math: The Theory Behind the Formulas (Wiley Finance).

Karon Wright, ’70 BA, ’72 MA, Theatre Arts, who previously worked as a television actress and community college theatre professor, now heads Greater Contribution, a nonprofit that provides micro loans to women in East Africa and Haiti to help them establish modest businesses and escape poverty. To date, 8,600 loans, impacting more than 40,000 people, have been given out.

 


’80s

Sydney Brink, ’81 Environmental Studies/Photojournalism, was inducted into the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame. He moved to Missouri in the early 1990s and joined the staff of the Sedalia Democrat, covering the events and people in central Missouri for the next 20 years. Earlier in his career, he worked at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner and the Santa Fe New Mexican.

William Cary, ’84 Finance, joined the board of Rush Enterprises, a Texas-based firm that operates the largest network of commercial vehicle dealerships in the U.S. From 2008 to 2014, he served as president and COO of GE Capital, the financial services unit of General Electric.

Beverly Corbett, ’88 MA Education, who wrote, illustrated and self-published Elbe, the tale of a clever stork, gave a talk on self-publishing at the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka in February.

Larry Gaffaney, ’84 Business, was appointed to the Alaska Royalty Oil and Gas Development Advisory Board by Gov. Sean Parnell in October. President of Huna Totem Corporation, he is also a board member of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce and the Hoonah Community Fisheries Corporation.

Fred Greco, ’85 Aeronautics, is director of maintenance for the Port of Long Beach. He was previously public works operations superintendent for the city of Anaheim.

Dave Hober, ’87 Political Science, ’93 MPA, ’99 MS Criminal Justice, previously deputy police chief of the San Jose Police Department, is Monterey’s new assistant police chief. He began his career with the San Jose Police Department in 1988.

Bill Holden, ’80 Spanish, retired from the U.S. Navy and teaching, reports that he now spends most of his time “vagabonding around the world on military transport planes.”

Holly Lane, ’88 MFA Art, had a solo exhibition of her paintings and sculpture at Cuesta College’s Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery in San Luis Obispo in March.

Monique Morrow, ’80 French, CTO of Cisco’s new frontiers development and engineering, received the 2014 Clementina Saduwa Award from IEEE Region 8 Women in Engineering. She was also recognized in 2014 as one of the “Top Ten Influential IT Women in Europe.”

Reshma Nigam, ’87 MBA, CEO/president of aMarketForce, joined Lucas College and Graduate School of Business’s advisory board, the Global Leadership Council. “It is an honor to serve on the advisory board of my alma mater,” Nigam said. “I hope to support the college in realizing its mission of achieving global status as a leading business school.”

Jeff Nollette, ’86 Business Administration, ’92 MBA, is worldwide vice president of channel sales at Violin Memory, a Santa Clara-based firm that designs and manufactures computer data storage products.

Darryl Reina, ’83 Recreation and Leisure Studies, is the girls’ varsity basketball coach at Newark Memorial High School in Newark, Calif., and a consultant for the sports website RealGM.com. For 38 years he was recreation/community services director for the city of Newark.

Elia Scettrini, ’80 Spanish, a Spanish teacher at Gilroy High School, received Gilroy Chamber of Commerce’s Educator of the Year Award in a February ceremony. Husband Larry Scettrini, ’79 Spanish, retired last year as a juvenile hall behavioral health counselor in Santa Clara County’s Department of Mental Health.

Amy Taylor, ’88 MLIS, most recently manager of the Modesto library system, is Merced County’s new head librarian.

Matt Toledo, ’89 Marketing, publisher and CEO of the Los Angeles Business Journal, joined the board of directors of Greenwood Hall, Inc., an education technology provider.

Mark Van Tine, ’80 Aeronautics, Jeppesen CEO and vice president of digital aviation at The Boeing Company, joined the Experimental Aircraft Association’s board of directors. An EAA Young Eagles pilot for nearly a decade, he flies a Glasair Sportsman built by him and eight high school students in 2013.

Jack Weldon, ’85 Marketing, is vice president of marketing at First Tech Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Mountain View. He previously served as senior director of global digital marketing and operations at Visa, Inc.

Karol Wight, ’85 Art, previously senior curator of antiquities at the Getty Villa, is now executive director and curator of ancient and Islamic glass at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.

 


’90s

Geoff Alexander, ’96 MA Education, published Films You Saw In School: A Critical Review of 1,153 Classroom Educational Films (1958-1985) in 74 Subject Categories (McFarland, 2014). He is director of the Academic Film Archive of North America, the first archive solely dedicated to the history, preservation, and scholarship of educational films for the classroom.

Steve Bennett, ’90 Journalism, joined the Santa Cruz Sentinel as sales manager. Most recently he was community relations manager for Santa Cruz County’s Second Harvest Food Bank.

Edesa Bitbadal, ’96 Political Science, ’10 MPA, the former economic development coordinator for the city of San Carlos, was hired as the economic development manager of Milpitas in December. Earlier in her career, she worked for the San Jose Redevelopment Agency. For the past five years, she has been a member of the San Jose Planning Commission.

Rob de Geus, ’99 Business, ’09 MPA, is director of community services for the city of Palo Alto. He has worked for Palo Alto for 15 years, first as a recreation coordinator and most recently as acting community services director.

Rachelle Gold, ’93 Humanities, was promoted to associate professor of English at North Carolina Central University and received NCCU’s Award for Teaching Excellence, conferred at commencement ceremonies in May.

Jeff Frazier, ’93 MS Criminal Justice, who previously held executive positions at Microsoft and Cisco Systems, has joined Wynyard Group, a New Zealand-based firm that specializes in crime fighting software. As senior vice president, Americas, he oversees business growth in the U.S., Canada, Central America and South America.

Joseph Lasaga, ’98 Molecular Biology, is vice president of business development and alliance management at Galena Biopharma, a biopharmaceutical company based in Portland, Ore., that specializes in developing targeted oncology treatments for cancer. He was previously senior director of business development at Nektar Therapeutics in San Francisco.

James Moniz, ’90 MBA, joined Santa Clara’s Intevac as CFO in November. Previously he was CFO of Nanometrics, a manufacturer of process control metrology and inspection systems.

Dawn Nakanishi, ’94 MFA Spatial Art, is an art studio instructor and heads the small metals and jewelry program at Cabrillo College in Aptos.

Leslie Neal-Boylan, ’92 MS Nursing, is new dean of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Nursing. She was previously dean of Quinnipiac University School of Nursing in Connecticut. The author of the first research-based book regarding workplace issues that face nurses with disabilities, she received the 2014 Virginia A. Henderson Award from the Connecticut Nurses’ Association for outstanding contributions to nursing research.

Jeff Olson, ’94 Radio/TV/Film, is manager of Angels Theater in Angels Camp, Calaveras County. While attending SJSU, he served as projectionist for four different cinemas. His favorite film genre: film noir.

Shelly Paiva, ’99 Marketing, owner and majority stockholder of C.H. Reynolds, an electrical contracting firm, was named 2014 Businesswoman of the Year by the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce. Over the past 20 years, she has worked in every department of the company her father founded, from materials deliveries to HR to purchasing and finance. “I would encourage any woman seeking a leadership role to tackle a range of responsibilities,” Paiva said. “It’s one of the best ways to truly learn what makes a business run and succeed.”

Annette Lutnesky Perry, ’91 MLS, owns Le Librarian College Scholarship Resources and Coaching Services, recently recognized with a “Best of Hollister” business award.

Steve Pittari, ’95 MBA, is vice president of program management at Park Electrochemical Corp. in Melville, N.Y. He joined the company in 2010 and most recently served as vice president of business development.

James Revell, ’96 Political Science, is vice president of global marketing at Events.com, a provider of cloud-based applications for both event organizers and event goers, headquartered in La Jolla. He was previously a senior director of digital marketing and distribution at Ticketmaster.

Anthony Rocca, ’91 Industrial and Organizational Psychology, is senior director of Global Alliances and Technology Partnerships at Pluribus Networks in Palo Alto.

Greg Schmidt, ’95 Sociology, manages the Residence Inn San Diego Sorrento Mesa/Sorrento Valley, located near Sea World, Balboa Park and LEGOLAND. He began his career with Marriott in 1987 as a server at Courtyard Nashville Brentwood in Tennessee.

Conroy Smith, ’97 Health Science, is a case manager at Primary Health Care in Des Moines, Iowa.

Curt Stapleton, ’90 Recreation, is national sales manager in the Los Angeles office of AlliedPRA, Inc., a destination management company.

Noel St. John, ’94 Electrical Engineering, is a CAD engineer specializing in synthesis and logic checking at Apple.

Mohsen Tarin, ’94 Criminology, is president of Electro Imaging Systems in Livermore. At SJSU, he served as president of the Afghan Student Association.

John Bergman, ’08 Mechanical Engineering, is completing his master’s degree in mechanical engineering/mechanical design at Santa Clara University.

Rachel Boulds, ’01 Accounting, is CFO of Seven Arts Entertainment in Los Angeles. Her specialty is the preparation of full disclosure financial statements for public companies in compliance with GAAP and SEC requirements.

Taneeka Bourgeois-daSilva, ’01 Criminal Justice, published Broccoli Chronicles (Little Kids, Big Voices, 2014), a ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year finalist. She founded TCD Kids Foundation, a nonprofit that offers tutoring and mentoring services to youth, in 2008.

David Coats, ’02 Business Administration, is director of Maxim Health Care Services’ travel nursing division, TravelMax, which recruits healthcare professionals for contract and permanent assignments throughout the U.S. Earlier in his career, he worked as an account manager for Maxim’s homecare and staffing operations in Southern California.

Christie Hageman Conover, ’06 Vocal Performance, sang the lead female role in Opera San Jose’s world premiere of Where Angles Fear to Tread in February. Since graduating from SJSU, she has competed in the Miss America Pageant as Miss Montana, earned a master’s degree in music from the University of Colorado Boulder and performed with the Minnesota Opera, Opera Colorado, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Livermore Valley Opera and Stockton Opera.

Ryan Christine Coulson, ’03 Business Management, is senior vice president and wealth strategist for Atlantic Trust’s San Francisco and Newport Beach offices. Her 10 years of experience in private estate and tax planning include a post, most recently, at Wells Fargo Private Bank. She is a member of the Trusts and Estates section of the State Bar of California.

Kroeun Dav, ’07 Interior Design, was promoted to senior designer at Studio O+A, a San Francisco-based design firm. He joined the firm as an intern while still a student at SJSU.

Douglas Derrick, ’01 MBA, assistant professor in the College of Information Science & Technology, University of Nebraska Omaha, received the Outstanding Teaching Award from the university’s alumni association in April.

Carmen Gil, ’07 Social Work, was elected to the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System’s board of directors. She directs Monterey’s Building Healthy Communities initiative, funded by the California Endowment, a private health foundation.

Africa Hands, ’08 MLIS, published Successfully Serving the College Bound (American Library Association Editions), a guide for public librarians.

Samie Hartley, ’08 Journalism, joined the Napa Valley Register as online editor in October. She was previously an associate editor at Contra Costa County’s Brentwood Press.

Vanessa Hill, ’07 BS Marketing, ’14 MA Communication Studies, is marketing coordinator at McManis Faulkner, a law firm in downtown San Jose.

Curtis Jacobson, ’08 Political Science, a 23-year firefighter with the San Jose Fire Department, was appointed interim fire chief in January. He most recently served as deputy fire chief in the department’s Bureau of Operational Support.

Arcadi Kolchak, ’09 Systems Physiology, ’14 MPH, is executive director of San Francisco Hep B Free. Launched in 2007, this first-of-its-kind collaboration between government agencies, community groups and businesses aims to make San Francisco the first city in the nation to be hepatitis B free. Kolchak previously served as campaign director for Hepatitis B Free Santa Clara County.

Lynette Komar, ’05 Environmental Studies, is completing her law degree at the University of San Francisco School of Law. She interned at the Center for Resource Solutions last summer and also served as the Environmental Law Society’s career development chair.

Kristine Macalalad, ’07 MLIS, new children’s librarian at Chico Library, worked as technical services coordinator and patient education librarian at San Francisco General Hospital’s UCSF Barnett-Briggs Medical Library for more than a decade. “In a public library with youth services, you’re not just providing informational resources, you’re providing things that will foster a love of reading,” she said.

Shawn Phipps, ’02 MS Occupational Therapy, chief quality officer and associate hospital administrator at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, was elected vice president of the American Occupational Therapy Association for a three-year term.

Carlos Rodriguez, ’03 Aviation Operations, an officer with the Hollister Police Department, was named Man of the Year by the Mexican-American Committee of San Benito County. In 2014, he received the Inter-Service Recognition Award from the California Emergency Medical Services Authority, an award that honors heroic acts. Rodriquez, first on the scene, delivered life-saving aid to victims of a shooting at a motorcycle rally last year.

Cynthia Siegel, ’06 MFA Spatial Arts, a ceramics artist, is a 2014-2015 Fulbright-Nehru Scholar, based in Kolkata, India.

Lauren Stowell, ’08 Animation/Illustration, is the founder of American Duchess Historical Footwear, a Reno, Nev, footwear company that manufactures reproductions of 18th century shoes, Regency slippers, Victorian button boots and more. American Duchess shoes have been part of the costuming in several Hollywood, Broadway and opera productions to date, and Whoopi Goldberg wore a pair on “The View.” Stowell received a 2014 Entrepreneur of the Year Award from Nevada’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology. Joan Ang, ’13 Graphic Design, based in San Jose, is a graphic designer at Zooka Creative.

Ryan Barringer, ’10 Advertising, senior vice president of marketing and brand strategy at San Jose’s Bridge Capital Holdings, made the Silicon Valley Business Journal’s 2014 “40 Under 40” list. The list recognizes professionals under the age of forty who are having a demonstrable impact on their industries and communities. Barringer joined Bridge Capital Holdings in 2012.

Tamiko Boiko, ’13 Creative Arts, is a program assistant in the city of Sunnyvale’s Department of Library and Community Services.

Jessie Bushell, ’13 MS Organizational Biology, Conservation and Ecology, was promoted from assistant curator to director of conservation at the San Francisco Zoo. She also spearheads the zoo’s western pond turtle (California’s only native freshwater aquatic turtle) project. She began working at the zoo as a Koret Animal Resource Center intern.

Sid De La Cruz, ’10 Music Composition, scored the music for the film 24 Hours, starring Mischa Barton, Tom Sizemore and Michael Pare.

Jasmine Eaddy, ’14 Speech Communication, works as a general news assistant at KCRA 3 News in Sacramento.

Priyanka Erande, ’14 Electrical Engineering, is a hardware engineer at Cisco in San Jose.

Mike Germanis, ’11 Mechanical Engineering, is a field application engineer for Insulectro, a suppler of materials used to manufacture printed circuit boards headquartered in Mountain View. He was previously a process engineer at Viasystems in San Jose.

Norma Gomez, ’13 Psychology, is a behavioral technician for Easter Seals, Central California.

Scott Hargrove, ’10 MLIS, is CEO of the Fraser Valley Regional Library, the largest public library system in British Columbia, serving more than 700,000 patrons through 25 community libraries. He also holds a master’s degree in information processing from the University of York, United Kingdom.

Tracy Hinson, ’13 Journalism, based in Sunnyvale, is weather anchor at KSBW Action 8 News.

Samantha Leal, ’13 Speech Communication, is a men’s and kids’ apparel merchandiser at Walmart Global eCommerce.

Rebecca Machetta, ’13 MLIS, is the new teen librarian at the Newark (Calif.) Library. She previously worked at the Hayward Public Library as a teen librarian and, earlier in her career, as a generalist librarian at San Jose Public Library.

David McCormic, ’14 MUP, is an associate landscape designer for the city of San Jose, working with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services to build and plan park and recreation facilities.

Jessica Mora, ’12 Justice Studies, joined the Watsonville police force in October. She previously worked in computer forensics at Seagate Technology in Cupertino.

Deanna Smith, ’14 MA Transportation Management, an administrative assistant for Monterey Salinas Transit, received the Nevill A. Parker Award for her research paper on citizen participation in policy planning. The award is given by the National Council of University Transportation Centers.

Jennifer Speno, ’11 Accounting, CPA, joined Gilroy’s John Blaettler Accountancy Corporation in October.

Rebecca Stavick, ’12 MLIS, former staff development specialist for the Omaha (Neb.) Public Library system, was named executive director of Omaha’s first digital library, scheduled to open in the fall of 2015.

McKenzie Taylor, ’10 Political Science, a placement specialist at U.S. Peace Corps headquarters in Washington, D.C., is pursuing a master’s degree in peace operations at George Mason University.

Austin Toloza, ’10 Kinesiology, a San Jose-based personal trainer, was recognized as one of the “Top Ten Personal Trainers to Watch” by Life Fitness, a fitness equipment firm. For the honor, Toloza competed with 1,700 personal trainers from 43 countries.

Jenna Varden, ’13 MLS, is the new community services librarian at Pacifica Library. She has worked for the San Mateo Public Library since 2011 as a library aide, assistant and reference librarian.

Lindsay Warkentin, ’11 Speech Communication, was named head coach of the girls’ swim team at San Clemente High School in February. She is currently completing her master’s degree in athletic administration at Concordia University.

Emily Wood, ’14 English, of San Jose, is a certified domestic violence crisis counselor at the YWCA.
