The MPP and Lead Certificate Training Program: What Does It Take to Be a Spartan Leader?

At San José State University, leadership is not defined by title alone, it is reflected in how we inspire, guide, and support those around us. This past fall, University Personnel launched two professional development certificate programs designed to help employees strengthen their leadership skills and grow in their careers: the Lead Certificate Training Program and the MPP Certificate Training Program.

“Investing in our people is the most powerful way we strengthen SJSU,” said Jeanne Durr, Interim Senior Associate Vice President for University Personnel. “These programs help current and emerging leaders build the skills and confidence they need to create a supportive and thriving campus community.”

Each program brought together a team of dedicated instructors and campus experts who shared their knowledge, experience, and passion for leadership. Topics included role clarity, inclusive leadership, emotional intelligence, employee relations, and effective communication. Facilitators from departments such as Employee Relations, Talent Acquisition, Benefits and Leaves, and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion guided participants through real-world scenarios that encouraged practical learning and reflection.

The Lead Certificate Training Program focused on developing everyday leadership by fostering trust, motivation, and teamwork among colleagues. The MPP Certificate Program supported managers and supervisors in navigating complex topics such as classification and compensation, recruiting, and managing with emotional intelligence. Participants described the experience as both energizing and practical, offering tools they could immediately apply to their teams.

“It gave me a fresh perspective on how to communicate more effectively and support my colleagues with empathy and clarity,” shared one participant. “Every session offered something I could bring back to my department right away.”

By creating shared learning spaces, these programs encouraged collaboration and open dialogue about what it means to lead at SJSU. The result is a growing network of Spartans committed to learning, reflection, and continuous improvement, which are key elements of Transformation 2030’s vision for professional growth and community well-being.

Spring Semester offerings will be announced shortly, including registration information and dates. Space will be limited to ensure an engaging and collaborative experience, and participants who complete all sessions will earn a certificate. Be sure to stay tuned to your inbox for that opportunity. We look forward to learning and growing together in the months ahead.
