  1. This is a fascinating book. The history of welfare in the US that is discussed in the first chapter is very enlightening and the stories of the families that the authors follow are both heartbreaking and infuriating. I have learned a great deal from reading this book about how policy has consequences way beyond what the policy makers intended. However, I do not think it would hold the interest of many of our students if it were not assigned reading. Consequently, I do not recommend it for the Campus Reading Program. But I do encourage you to read it.
