  1. This is an extremely well written book, which has won a number of prizes. It emphasizes the conflict that every immigrant experiences between traditional values and the norms of the adopted culture. However, I do not recommend it for our first year students because of its focus on sexual abuse and its explicit sex scenes.

I found parts of What Lies Between Us a little too graphic. If someone had given this book to my freshman daughter I am not sure that I would have appreciated it. As an adult I can read it with empathy for the protagonist, but I think it is too harsh and gritty for a recommended freshman common read.
