Biz Class Hotel Offered to Some Returning Undergrads

By Pat Lopes Harris, Media Relations Director

With freshmen enrollment surging, San Jose State is assigning some returning undergrads planning to live on campus to spend fall 2011 in a nearby business-class hotel.

SJSU expects to enroll approximately 4,000 first-time freshmen this fall, up from 2,760 first-time freshmen one year ago.

At the same time, in order to boost student success rates, the university is requiring all first-time frosh from more than 30 miles away to live on campus.

As a result, demand for campus housing has outstripped supply, and we are turning to returning students for help. SJSU wants to provide freshmen with the same experience returning residents received when they were freshmen.

As a result, we have sent email and MySJSU messages to around 245 undergrads bound for Joe West Hall and the Bricks to go for a hotel instead at no additional cost.

Amenities will include light rail or shuttle service, free parking, weekly housekeeping, a fitness room, pool, spa, laundry facilities, and SJSU housing staff on site.

“The Classics” (Joe West and the Bricks) have much in common with the hotel, meaning shared bedrooms and bathrooms, and meal plans rather than full kitchens.

Students can also cancel their housing contracts and meal plans without penalty. Final room and roommate assignments will be available after July 25.
