Wed Mar 11: Lonely Wolf: The Legend of Alexander Grothendieck

On Wed Mar 11, we will have our first non-job-talk colloquium in a while, but it’s still a special colloquium: We are very pleased to have Sin-Min Lee (SJSU CS Emeritus) to talk about “Lonely Wolf: The legend of Alexander Grothendieck”.  Grothendieck, who passed away on Nov 13, 2014, was one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century.  However, in his last 20 years he lived as a hermit, isolated from his family, friends, and the mathematical community.  Prof. Lee will give some recollections of the years 1970-1979 when he lived and studied in France with Grothendieck, and also address why Grothendieck abandoned mathematics.
