Presentation Title: Making a Difference: The Power of Peer Mentorship
Presenter(s): Claire Bowling, Imani Singleton, and Samantha Warriner, School of Information
Abstract: The peer mentorship program at San Jose State University provides MLIS graduate students a practical experience in teaching and learning in a fully online environment. Peer mentors engage with collaborative technologies, apply learning theories in a real-world context, design instructional videos, deliver live web conference sessions, partner with a faculty instructor, grade and provide feedback on assignments in the Canvas learning management system, and meet the informational and social-emotional needs of newcomers to the program. Peer mentors also develop and hone professional leadership and communication skills which will be vital to their future careers. In this presentation, three peer mentors discuss how the peer mentorship enhanced their professional growth in areas including instructional design, liaising with teaching faculty, academic coaching, public-speaking, designing a synchronous presentation, and providing meaningful advice and referrals empowering student success. Information about how to apply for a peer mentorship will be included at the end of the presentation.
