Presentation Title: The Information Needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Presenter(s): Joy Metcalfe

Abstract: The deaf and hard of hearing community can be found around the globe and is one of the largest groups with what is often labeled “invisible needs”. Members are brought together by a shared physical condition and a common language and culture. In a world where the hearing language is the majority, the deaf and hard of hearing seek accommodations and support in their information seeking behavior. The Sense-Making Theory reveals gaps and challenges present to this community’s information needs and helps move library and information professionals towards more inclusive programming and services. By asking what gaps are present in the deaf and hard of hearing community’s access to information, libraries and information centers around the world can begin implementing targeted support and best practices. Attention to these gaps would foster more cultural awareness. Additionally, it would promote a feeling of safety and confidence for the deaf and hard of hearing community as they utilize these spaces.
