Presentation Title: Queering the Catalog: LGBTQIA2S+ Centered Approaches to Building Classification Systems

Presenter(s): Marcus Ortiz

Abstract: For INFO 266 Collection Management, I researched how libraries serve LGBTQIA2S+ communities while working within the confines of inherently biased classification systems such as DDC and LOC. These systems place communities in sections that often perpetuate harmful narratives if serious consideration is not given to their placement. In response to these pitfalls, public and academic libraries have designed and implemented community-centered classification systems that capture the intersecting identities of their users. Through surveys and participatory research, these libraries have developed a uniquely queer approach to collections management. Building new classification systems can be a complex task to undertake, requiring extensive resources that many libraries cannot fully support. However, various case studies provide libraries alternatives to the current systems in place. Incorporating these recommendations into the library’s collections practices can mitigate known issues with standard classifications. The work of LGBTQIA2S+ libraries is enlightening LIS professionals with equitable librarianship practices when serving these communities.
