CASA student makes Academic All-America team

Darcie Anderson, a recent graduate of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts Kinesiology department at San José State University and a member of the SJSU women’s swim team, was selected to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Division I At-Large second team.

Anderson was one of 45 students nationwide to be selected in her division for the At-Large second team that included athletes involved in a variety of sports, including swimming, gymnastics and more.

Anderson graduated summa cum laude with a 3.983 GPA, according to the SJSU Spartans blog. She received the President’s Scholar twice, was selected as an academic all-conference honoree three times and as a Scholar Athlete at SJSU. She served as vice president of the Pre-Occupational Therapy Club in 2013-14. In 2012, she was also a CSCAA Scholar All America Honorable Mention honoree.

“I am thrilled to earn this award,” Anderson said, in an interview for the athletics blog.  “I put in a lot of work in the classroom and in the water.  That hard work paid off with this award.  Our coach Sage Hopkins encourages strong academics from everyone on the team.  `You are going to school for academics, not just athletics.'”

In the pool, Anderson, a breaststroke specialist, won 14 races in 2013-14. She garnered All-Mountain West honors in the 100 and 200 breaststroke in 2014 and was a 12-time all-conference award winner during her career.  Anderson competed at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials.

The at-large team for the Capital One Academic All-America® women’s program includes the sports of bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse rifle, rowing skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.
