The $7,000 gift is an example of how retired SJSU faculty continue to support the mission of the university and remain involved in the ongoing activities of the current faculty.

The Emeritus and Retired Faculty Association (ERFA), an organization with more than 300 members, has made an unrestricted gift of $l,000 to each of the seven colleges at San Jose State University, for a total of $7,000.

The checks, presented by members of the ERFA board of directors to deans during college welcome meetings Aug. 22 and 23, are examples of how retired SJSU faculty continue to support the mission of the university and remain involved in the ongoing activities of the current faculty.

“We may be retired, but most of us have spent our careers at SJSU and we want to continue a close relationship with the university,” said Dennis L. Wilcox, current ERFA president and the former director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The SJSU ERFA, which is affiliated with the CSU statewide ERFA, also made a $1,000 unrestricted grant to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. library last year in memory of Hobart Burns, who served many years as professor, provost, and even interim president of the university.

The ERFA of San Jose State University is the organization serving emeritus and retired faculty. One of its primary objectives, in addition to supporting the ongoing academic programs of the university, is to foster continuing contact among retired faculty through a number of activities. This includes five newsletters a year, a published directory of members, field trips, and a fall and spring luncheon. An ERFA board member, Peter Buzanski, emeritus professor of history, also serves on the Academic Senate.

“All emeritus and retired faculty are eligible to join ERFA,” said Wilcox, “and the great part is that annual dues are only $15.”
