Peter Arellano, ’50 Physical Education, age 93, on June 14, in Escalon. A U.S. Air Force and World War II veteran, Arellano was a teacher and coach at Escalon High School for more than 30 years. A member of the Lions Club for 65 years, he co-chaired the Escalon exhibit at the Stockton County Fair for more than 20 years.

Donald Banks, ’52 Accounting, age 89, on May 2, in Burlingame. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Banks was a U.S. Navy and World War II veteran. He worked for Del Monte Foods for 35 years.

Barbara Bateman, ’45 Music, age 92, on Dec. 28, 2014, in Palo Alto. Bateman taught music and English in the Palo Alto Unified School District for more than 30 years.

Betty Sahm Brewster, ’55, on June 9, in Riverside. A native of Port Chicago, Calif., Brewster worked in the offices of the U.S. Air Force base in Chateauroux, France, immediately after graduation. A resident of Riverside since 1962, she worked as a legal secretary and was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Jack Byers, ’57 MA Theatre Arts, age 83, on May 3, in Palm Springs. A professor emeritus of theatre at San Francisco State University, Byers began his teaching career at Utah State University and also taught at UC Santa Barbara. Also a costume designer, he was resident costume designer for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and co-author of The Theatre Student: Costuming (Rosen Publishing Group). He retired from teaching in 1992.
Vivian Calhoun, ’49 Business Administration, age 87, on Aug. 7. A native of San Francisco, Calhoun was a member of Alpha Phi sorority, Inner Wheel (Rotary) in Yuba City and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
Mary Lou Christian, ’56 Elementary Education, age 81, on Aug. 19, in Redding. A San Francisco native, Christian worked as a United Air Lines stewardess before marriage. She accompanied her husband, employed by the CIA, to Europe, where the couple lived in the 1960s. Relocating to Santa Rosa after her husband’s retirement, Christian taught elementary school for 24 years in the Rincon Valley Union School District.

Frederick Cockrill, ’52 Marketing, age 86, on May 17, in Great Falls, Mont. A U.S. Navy veteran, Cockrill worked for Pacific Northwest Bell in Seattle before his retirement. At SJSU, he served as president of ATO fraternity.
Virginia Constable, ’43 Home Economics, age 93, on May 16, in Walnut Creek. A native of Los Gatos, Constable worked as a dietitian at Stanford Hospital and other Bay Area hospitals during her career. She retired in 1986. A member of Walnut Creek United Methodist Church, she was a longtime supporter of the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society.
Nicole Sage Cormen, ’83 MA Applied Linguistics, age 58, on Aug. 19, in Lebanon, Calif. A native of Glen Cove, N.Y., Cormen served four terms on the Lebanon City Council. She received the Allen and Nan King Award for Community Service and was a former Lebanon Citizen of the Year.
Frank Cracolice, ’61 Journalism, age 82, on June 24, in San Jose. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Cracolice worked as a sports reporter and copy editor at the Berkeley Gazette and the San Jose Mercury News during his career.
Floyd “Dave” Davis, ’56 Natural/Physical Science, on May 3. A Kansas native and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Davis received a doctorate in education from UC Berkeley and finished his long career in education as superintendent of the Taft School District in California. He retired in 1990.

Nancy Lee Drew, ’52 Elementary Education, age 85, on June 13, in San Jose. Drew taught first grade at Noble Elementary School in the Berryessa Union School District. At SJSU, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Samuel Fedeli Jr., ’67 Mechanical Engineering, age 78, on June 10. Fedeli began his career at Standard Oil in San Francisco and retired from Wizler and Kelly Consulting Engineers in 2003. Among the projects he worked on: designing oil rigs in the North Sea and designing pipeline and refueling systems for military bases in Guam, the Philippines and South Korea.

Patricia Golsie, ’52 Education, age 84, on Aug. 8, in Sutter Creek. A native of Stockton, Golsie was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. A gifted singer, she often performed in piano bars and once sang with Nat King Cole.
Mario Gonzalez, ’95 Molecular Biology/Chemistry, age 42, on April 12. A native of St. Helena, Gonzalez worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 19 years at Lifescan, Merck, Integra Life Sciences and other companies.
Matthew Goodshaw, ’94 Aviation, age 46, on April 30, in Huntington Beach. A native of Midland, Mich., Goodshaw was an engineer at Boeing in Southern California for more than 18 years.

Florence Haimes, ’38 Education, age 97, on June 2, in San Francisco. Haimes received her master’s degree and doctorate from Stanford and was a professor of chemistry at San Francisco State University.

James Harget, ’55 Journalism, age 83, on Aug. 20, in San Jose. A native of Lacrosse, Wis., Harget worked as a reporter and photojournalist before becoming a life insurance agent. He was a fan of Dixieland music and played the ukulele.

Edna Herrier, ’43 Education, age 93, on May 22, in Salinas. A native of Auburn, Herrier retired from teaching in the Salinas City Elementary School District in 1982. She was a member of the Salinas Women’s Club, Active Seniors and the California Retired Teachers Association.
Virginia Hinkle, ’69 Recreation, age 69, on July 21, in San Jose. A native of Ripon, Hinkle served as youth minister, liturgist and catechist for the Diocese of San Jose for 31 years.
Lionel Hinojosa, ’72 Physics, age 87, on May 22, in San Jose. A Texas native and U.S. Army veteran, Hinojosa worked as an aerospace electrical design and systems engineer at Lockheed for 34 years. He worked on electrical designs for Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space capsule projects and the Space Shuttle project, among others. He retired in 1986.
Harry Hofman, ’48 Business Administration, age 91, on May 18, in Morro Bay. A U.S. Air Force and World War II veteran, Hofman began his career working with Union Oil. He later served as mayor of Delano. In 2013, age 89, he retired as a realtor/broker at Morro Bay Realty.
Lillie Yuriko Ikeda, ’60 Medical Technology, age 77, on May 16, in San Jose. Ikeda worked as a hospital medical technician in San Jose for 43 years before her 2003 retirement.
James Ishaq, ’06 MPH, on Feb. 17, in Santa Cruz. A native of Canton, China, Ishaq received his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He worked for 25 years at the Scotts Valley Medical Clinic, retiring in 1999.

Patricia Ann Jocius, ’87 MA Education, age 65, on June 10, in Sunnyvale. A native of San Jose, Jocius worked in emergency services for the cities of Sunnyvale and Cupertino during her career and retired from the San Mateo Fire Department.
Michael Komes, ’63 Engineering, age 79, on Aug. 11. A native of Sacramento and U.S. Army veteran, Komes was employed by the Bechtel Group for his entire career. He retired in 1991.

Floyd Kuehnis Jr., ’66 Accounting, age 72, on May 13. Kuehnis was a managing partner at KPMG until his retirement at age 52.

Mary Lansdowne, Interior Design, age 100, on Aug. 3, in Carmel. A popular Monterey Peninsula artist, Lansdowne was known for her floral and seascape oil paintings and pencil sketches of historical buildings. She was a member of the Carmel Art Association, the Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Diana Leone, ’73 MA Art, age 75, on May 12. A Modesto native, Leone owned the Quilting Bee, with stores in Los Altos and Mountain View, for 23 years and authored The New Sampler Quilt. A watercolorist, she exhibited her work at the Los Gatos Museum Gallery and the Maui Hands Gallery in Maui.

Ralph Mackey, Criminal Justice Administration, on May 18. A Korean War veteran, Mackey began his career as a police officer for the city of San Jose. Returning to his native Washington state in 1964, he worked as a regional supervisor for the state Department of Social and Health Services and as superintendent of the Soldiers Home in Orting.
Frank Maida, MSW, age 68, on July 17, in Monterey. During his career, Maida worked as a social worker, counselor and therapist and taught courses at CSUMB. He also served on the boards of the Monterey County AIDS Project and the Coalition of Homeless Services.
John Marlo, ’56 Criminal Justice Administration, age 81, on May 26, in Aptos. A retired Santa Cruz County Superior Court judge, Marlo began his career as a San Jose police officer. After earning a law degree from Santa Clara University, he served as Capitola’s city attorney. With his family, he owned and operated Aptos Vineyard and co-founded the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association. He retired from the bench in 1993.
Hugh McCarry, ’83 Accounting, age 55, on June 2. A native of Weaverville, McCarry was a cost accounting/project analyst at ARB in Fairfield.

Gilbert Mota Jr., ’60 Finance, age 77, on April 20, in Bakersfield. A native of Buttonwillow, Mota enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve after college and had a 50-year career as a State Farm insurance agent.
Todd Myhre, ’78 Business Administration, age 70, on April 11, in Hollister.
Raymond Norwood, ’53, on May 26. Norwood retired as senior vice president of Washington Natural Gas in 1989. At SJSU, he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity.
Bernard Nowlen III, ’72 Aeronautics, age 68, on May 31. An Oakland native and U.S. Navy veteran, Nowlen built and resold more than 30 airplanes during his 50-year aviation career. After retiring from active duty, he joined the Naval Reserves and became a Federal Express pilot, retiring as an A300 captain.
Jo Ellen Hutchinson Paganini, Psychology, age 68, on Aug. 9, in San Jose. A native of Port Townsend, Wash., Paganini held a master’s degree in social work from Sacramento State. She retired as director of social work at Hospice of San Joaquin Valley, where she had worked for 20 years.
Robert Pechner, ’51 Marketing, age 87, on June 20, in Aptos. A U.S. Air Force and Korean War veteran, Pechner was a San Francisco native. His career in the aerospace industry spanned more than 32 years. He volunteered with Mended Hearts, helping patients to recover from heart surgery.
Peter Pedrotti Jr., ’77 MA Microbiology, age 73, on July 24, in Oakland. A first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Pedrotti served in the Berlin Brigade in Germany and as an intelligence officer at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. A past master of both the Fidelity Lodge in San Francisco and the Oakland Durant Rockridge Lodge, he was awarded the Golden Veterans Award by the Masons of California.

Karen Petersen, ’83 MS Industrial and Systems Engineering, age 58, on May 12, in Santa Cruz. A native of Henderson, Nev., Petersen worked as a manufacturing manager at Sun Microsystems before becoming a restaurant reviewer for Good Times.

Richard Peterson, ’57 Social Science, age 85, on April 9. A Modesto native and U.S. Navy veteran, Peterson retired from a sales career at Sears in 1995.
Bernard “Ben” Reichmuth, ’57 Accounting, age 80, on Aug. 23, in Los Gatos. A native of San Francisco, Reichmuth founded Reichmuth & Associates and later became Gillcable’s marketing vice president and president/CEO of LOCATE. Executive director of the Spartan Foundation in the 1970s, he also served as president of the SJSU Alumni Association and was as a member of the President’s Advisory Council. In 2014, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Distinction by then-President Mo Qayoumi. Donations to the B.F. Reichmuth Athletic Endowment may be made through SJSU’s Tower Foundation.
Juan Reyes, ’71 Medical Technology, age 67, on June 16. A native of Bogotá, Colombia, Reyes was an OB-GYN physician and associate clinical professor at UCSF until 2009. After leaving UCSF, he ran clinics in Parlier and Earlimart.
Ernest Rideout, ’40 Education, age 97, on June 3, in Santa Cruz. A U.S. Army and World War II veteran, Rideout retired as principal of Dover Elementary School in Campbell in 1979 and over the next 26 years taught more than 3,500 people to sail through O’Neill’s Yacht Center in Santa Cruz. A member of the Santa Cruz Yacht Club since the age of 15, he received the Pacific Coast Yachting Association’s Langlais Trophy for exceptional service to the sport of yachting. The winner of hundreds of sailing trophies and awards, he won the Santana 22 National Championship Race at the age of 90.
John Romero, ’50 Journalism, age 85, on April 30. A U.S. Navy and Korean War veteran, Romero began his career as sports editor of the Las Vegas Review Journal. From 1960 to 1980, he served as marketing director of the Sahara on the Las Vegas Strip and co-founded International Gaming Promotions in 1979. He was the author of Casino Marketing (1984), Secrets of Casino Marketing (1998) and a novel, The Eisenhower Enigma (2013). In 2004, he received a Casino Marketing Lifetime Achievement Award.
Donna Lenz Rooney, ’60 Elementary Education, on June 21, in San Jose. Rooney was the third generation of her family to earn an education degree from SJSU. A member of Chi Omega sorority, she taught in San Jose, Visalia and Los Altos during her career and was co-captain of the Spartan Foundation’s Golden Blues, raising money for scholarships. She also served on the board of the SJSU Alumni Association’s Santa Clara Valley area chapter.
Vivian Rose, ’49 Mathematics, age 94, on June 8. A native of Verdigre, Neb., Rose taught elementary school in Corralitas and Red Bluff before joining the County of Tehama’s Office of Social Welfare. She taught Sunday School at Red Bluff Nazarene Church.
H.K. “Russ” Russell, ’50, age 91, on April 13. A member of the Spartan football team from 1947 to 1950, Russell was a U.S. Marine Corps and Korean War veteran. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., he worked in the export business and was named Poet Laureate of Oregon’s Brookings-Harbor Garden Club in 1996.
Madelyn Schmidt, ’45 Education, age 91, on July 24. Schmidt taught elementary school in the Lodi Unified School District for 29 years.
Larry Segesman, ’60 Industrial Management, age 77, on Aug. 12, in San Antonio, Texas. A native of Venice, Calif., Segesman had a 35-year career in civil service, working for many years as personnel director of the U.S. Army Health Services Command at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He retired in 1995. He was a Habitat for Humanity volunteer and member of the San Antonio Conservation Society.

John Sherbert, ’70 Electrical Engineering, age 68, on June 26, in Sonora. A native of Benkelman, Neb., Sherbert retired from a career at Pacific Bell in 1994 and later opened a handyman business in Moraga.
Richard Shull, ’80 Biochemistry, age 62, on Aug. 7, in San Jose. Shull worked for 35 years in the technology industry at AMD and Actel (now Microsemi) in Mountain View
John Silveira, ’59 Civil Engineering, age 84, on April 11, in Sacramento. A Modesto native and U.S. Navy veteran, Silveira retired in 1996 as deputy director of the California State Department of Water Resources.

Cyrus Solon, ’42 Education, age 94, on April 17, in Napa. A U.S. Marine Corps and World War II veteran, Solon enjoyed a long career in real estate in the San Jose area, where he lived for 63 years.
Ronald Spaulding, ’91 Theatre Arts, age 58, on June 10. A native of Billings, Mont., Spaulding worked for many years as a regional newspaper distribution manager in the Pleasant Hill area. Later in his career, he sold solar systems and served as show chairman for AKC dog shows.
Robert F. Stevens, ’66 Accounting, age 78, on June 1, in Santa Clara. A U.S. Navy veteran, Stevens worked as a senior programmer/analyst at IBM for many years and after retirement established Computer Assist in San Diego.
Paul Stewart, ’76 MS Journalism, age 63, on May 15, in San Jose. An Oakland native, Stewart became a reporter at the Gilroy Dispatch and the Lodi News-Sentinel after graduation. A real estate lobbyist for much of his career, he served as chief executive of the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors and governmental affairs director of the San Mateo County Association of Realtors.
Katherine Stone, ’47 Music, age 90, on July 22, in Castro Valley. After raising her family, Stone taught fourth grade at Corvallis School in San Lorenzo until her 1981 retirement. An accomplished seamstress, quilter and knitter, she was also a member of the San Lorenzo Piano Ensemble and performed with the group at Paramount Theater in Oakland.

Orla Sheila Stuart, ’74 Advertising, age 65, on July 17, in Santa Cruz. A native of Calcutta, India, Stuart worked as an account clerk for Santa Cruz County and later as an administrative assistant at Seagate Technology. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Mary Swanson, ’55 Business, age 77, on July 6, in Lincoln. A member of Sigma Kappa sorority, Swanson taught at Mountain View High School for 15 years and later worked at Lockheed Missiles and Argo Systems. She retired to Lincoln in 2001.
C.A. “Cal” Terhune, ’54 Sociology, age 85, on July 31, in Ione. A native of Roseville and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Terhune had a 35-year career with the California Youth Authority, retiring as director in 1991. He returned to state service in 1997 as director of California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He retired for a second time in 2000.
Pearl Jespersen Thoma, ’45 Education, on July 0. A native of Paso Robles, Thoma taught in San Jose immediately after graduation and later at Emerson Elementary School in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District.
Carl Underwood Jr., ’49 Journalism, age 91, on June 2, in Columbia, Mo. A U.S. Navy and World War II veteran, Underwood was a native of Boise, Idaho. At SJSU, he served as sports editor of the Spartan Daily and after graduation became sports editor at the Lodi News-Sentinel, a job he held for 40 years.
Don Velasco, ’62 Accounting, age 80, on March 18. A native of Fresno, Velasco served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He was an accountant for Westinghouse in Sunnyvale for 31 years and retired from Litton Corporation at age 77.
James B. Wallace, ’68 Business Administration, age 69, on May 12, in Benicia. A native of Sacramento, Wallace worked as a psychologist for 35 years and owned Human Behavior Associates in Benicia. He was a member of the Benicia Lions Club, the Solano County Agriculture Advisory Committee and the Benicia Educational Foundation.

Robert Walsh, ’86 Journalism, age 52, on May 28, in New York. A native of Ashland, Mass., Walsh began his newspaper career in the Bay Area, reporting at the Oakland Tribune and Monterey Herald. In 2000, he returned to the East Coast to work for The New York Post.

Denis Williams, ’82 Management, age 66, on July 29, in Sacramento. A native of Bethesda, Md., Williams was a U.S. Navy and Vietnam War veteran. As a civilian, he worked as an accountant for Santa Cruz County.

Larry Wood, ’76 MA Cybernetic Systems, age 75, on June 4, in Paradise. A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Wood played tennis at SJSU and worked as a software engineer in the aerospace industry for 35 years. He was a member of the Sonora Astronomical Society and the AWANA Sword Club.

Clyde Brewer, age 73, on March 20, in Burnet, Texas. A Texas native, Brewer began his career in education administration in Calgary, Alberta. In 1971, he became director of Records and Admissions at SJSU and retired in 2007.
Martha Heasley Cox, age 96, on Sept. 5, in San Francisco. A native of Arkansas, Cox joined SJSU’s English faculty in 1955 and retired in 1989. Founding director of the university’s Center for Steinbeck Studies (now The Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies), she also endowed a lecture series to bring distinguished speakers to campus. In 2000, she received the Tower Award in recognition of her service to the university.
Irene Dalis, age 89, on Dec. 14, 2014, in San Jose. An international mezzo-soprano opera star and founder of Opera San Jose, Dalis graduated from SJSU with a music degree in 1946. She made her professional debut in 1953 as Princess Eboli in Verdi’s Don Carlo. After 20 seasons performing with the New York Opera Company, she joined SJSU’s music faculty. She retired from teaching in 2004.
Julianne Dutcher, age 79, on July 22, 2014, in Yachats, Ore. A native of Hartford, Conn., Dutcher received her undergraduate degree from Skidmore College and her master’s degree from the University of Connecticut in 1959. In 1978, she joined SJSU’s Department of Health Professions, now the Department of Nutrition, Food Science and Packaging. She retired in 1992.
Larry Engelmann, age 73, on April 1, in San Jose. A Minnesota native, Engelmann received his doctorate from the University of Michigan and joined SJSU’s Department of History in 1969. The author of five books, including Daughter of China (2000), he served as film critic for the San Jose Mercury News from 1977 to 1989. He retired in 2005.
Louis J. Fischl Jr., age 92, on May 6, in Palo Alto. A Montana native, Fischl received an MBA from Stanford and joined SJSU’s business faculty in 1956. A member of the California State Bar, he received his law degree from Santa Clara University in 1966. He retired from teaching in 1992.
Edward Laurie, age 89, on July 2, in San Jose. A U.S. Navy and World War II veteran, Laurie received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UCLA. He joined SJSU’s College of Business in 1956 and subsequently served as chair of the Department of Marketing, graduate program coordinator and associate dean. He retired in 1991.
James Lovera, age 94, on Jan. 4. A ceramist and founding member of the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California, Lovera was a graduate of the California School of Fine Arts. For 38 years he taught in the Department of Art. In 1986, he retired and moved to California’s Gold Country.
Karl J. Mueller, age 89, on Feb. 28, in Los Gatos. A U.S. Army and World War II veteran, Mueller was a Nebraska native who received his doctorate from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He joined SJSU’s Department of Psychology in 1955 and also taught at the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology. He retired from SJSU in 1995.
John Rhoades, age 92, on Oct. 11, 2014, in Campbell. A North Dakota native, Rhoades received his master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1947 and his doctorate from the University of North Dakota in 1958. He joined the Department of Biology and Science Education in 1956. For two years he supervised Peace Corps volunteers who were teaching science in the Philippines. He retired from teaching in 1990.
Arthur Stump, age 97, on Feb. 1, in Eugene, Ore. A native of Monmouth, Ore., Stump received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Oregon State University, earning his doctorate in 1963. He joined SJSU’s Department of Chemistry in 1964 and retired in 1980.
Thomas Tutko, age 83, on Nov. 6, 2014, in Aptos. A native of Gallitzin, Pa., Tutko received his master’s degree and doctorate from Northwestern University. He joined the Department of Psychology in 1962 and retired from teaching in 1999. During his career, he lectured throughout the U.S., appeared on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson and counseled athletes playing for the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins.
Dominique Marie van Hooff, age 65, on Oct. 30, 2014, in Stanford. A native of Besançon, France, van Hooff received her undergraduate degree from the University of Besançon and her master’s degree and doctorate from Brigham Young University. A French literature scholar, she joined the Department of World Languages and Literature in 1989 and served as department chair from 2003 to 2012.
