Alumni Profile: 4th Street Pizza Co-Owner Josh McGhie

Co-owner of 4th Street Pizza Co. Josh McGhie, ’99 Marketing, started at San José State as a toddler.

“I’ve been going to San José State football games since I was three years old,” he says, laughing. “My grandpa’s best friend was Jack Elway.” (SJSU football head coach from 1979 to 1983, father of legendary quarterback John Elway.) “So, I grew up on San José State football. And then I graduated from there.”

This month, McGhie and business partner Rich Daly marked 14 years since they opened the doors of their popular sports bar on the corner of 4th and Santa Clara streets. A decade ago they doubled their space to make room for more students when “it gets crazy,” McGhie says, especially during Thursday, Friday and Saturday night “power hours.” Before—and, eventually, after—pandemic restrictions, 4th Street was and will again be a great place to eat, meet and watch big games.

“And we’re still open and taking online orders,”  McGhie says. Sometimes McGhie delivers pizzas himself. In the past, McGhie has typically handled both delivery and catering to university functions, when requested. Standard pepperoni pizza is most popular, but 4th Street also sells a lot of its specialty, creamy garlic chicken pizza.

Because even in trying times, 4th Street’s SJSU ties are still tight. “I’ve developed so many relationships,” McGhie says. “I know so many people on campus and on the faculty. It’s a great community. We’re very proud to be part of the San José State community.”

Normally, the 40 TV screens in 4th Street might display dozens of sporting events. “My favorite team?” Josh said, “It’s SJSU.”
