Katherine Ann Abbey, ’63 Nursing, age 72, on Dec. 5, 2013, in Atascadero. A native of Paso Robles, Abbey served as lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War. She later taught at Modesto Junior College and in Atascadero State Hospital’s Psychiatric Technician Program. She was a member of the Mennonite Church.

Mary Lou Allec, ’53 Physical Education, age 83, on Nov. 1, 2013, in Dana Point.

Patricia Alpers, ’47 Education, age 89, on Dec. 22, 2013, in San Jose. Alpers taught at Noble Elementary School for 29 years. After her retirement in 1982, she volunteered at the Sacred Heart Community Center.

Ronald William Bacon, ’68 Business Management, age 77, on July 13, 2013, in Pacifica. A native of St. Louis, Mo., and U.S. Air Force veteran, Bacon worked for the state of California for 32 years. He was a member of Pacifica’s Good Shepherd Church.

Geertje Bamford, ’60 Marketing, age 70, on Jan. 14, in San Jose.

Sam Barton, ’57 Physical Education, age 85, in January. A U.S. Army and Korean War veteran, Barton coached for 21 years at North High School in Bakersfield, primarily varsity baseball. He retired in 1992.

Isabel Theresa Bell, Counseling, age 79, on Feb. 2, 2012, in San José. Bell was a native of San Jose.

Jacob M. Bellig, ’45 History, age 97, on Oct. 31, 2013, in Danville. A native of Williamsport, Pa., Bellig served as pastor of the Neighborhood Church of San Jose, the Neighborhood Church of Oakland and, for 42 years, as the senior pastor of the Neighborhood Church of Castro Valley.

Neal E. Bohnet, ’57 Science, age 82, on March 15, 2013. Bohnet worked for the city of San Jose and Santa Clara County for 37 years.

Marguerite E. Brenda, Education, age 90, on Dec. 21, 2013, in Turlock. A native of Pigeon, Mich., Brenda taught elementary school in Okinawa and San Jose during the 1960s and 1970s.

Kenneth J. Briden, ’71 MA Education, age 76, on April 8, 2013, in Santiago, Chile. A native of Breckenridge, Texas, Briden’s trumpet playing skills got him inducted into his high school’s Hall of Fame. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Germany from 1957 to 1959. During his civilian career, he was band director of San José High School and music director of First Presbyterian Church of Milpitas. In 1993, he served as a Christian missionary in Kislovodsk, Russia.

Richard Joseph Browne, ’76 Business, age 59, on Sept. 15, 2013, in Campbell. A native of Chicago Ridge, Ill., Browne held a number of senior finance positions in Silicon Valley. A member of the SJSU Quarterback Club, he was also an active member of the Holy Name Society at St. Christopher Church.

Timothy Browning, ’87 Finance, age 49, on Nov. 26, 2013, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Browning worked for the University of Phoenix for 19 years and later at Grand Canyon University.

Robert Bryant Jr., MS Industrial Management, age 95, on Oct. 2, 2013, in Winslow, Ariz. A U.S. Army and World War II veteran, Bryant served as a radar instructor during the war. In 1958, he joined Lockheed’s Missile and Space Division in Sunnyvale, where he worked for 25 years.

Robert Carstensen, Civil Engineering, on Jan. 4, in Rogue Valley, Ore. A native or Oregon, Carstensen served in the U.S. Navy for three years. He worked as a Grants Pass city engineer, a Jackson County engineer and Jackson County’s director of Public Works. He retired in 1984.

Wilma Chinn, ’77 Liberal Studies, on Feb. 19, in Seaside.

Robert D. Chrisco, ’58 Social Science, age 77, on May 9, 2013, in Riverside.

Marjorie Church, Elementary Education, age 90, on July 7, 2013. Church taught elementary school in Monterey and San Benito counties. In the 1990s, she served as director of Prunedale Senior Center.

Zander Y. Collier Jr., ’65 BA, ’73 MA, Industrial Arts, on April 28, 2013. Collier owned South Bay Electric in San José.

Dorothy Jeanne Colwell, ’46 Psychology, age 89, on Oct. 24, 2013, in Rocklin. A native of San José, Colwell taught typing, bookkeeping and shorthand at Grant Union High School in Sacramento before leaving teaching to raise a family.

Raul Cortez, ’61 Business, age 80, on Oct. 11, 2013, in San Luis Opispo. A native of Los Angeles, Cortez served in the U.S. Navy for four years. As a civilian, he worked as a sales associate and manager of several automobile dealerships before investing with a business partner in a Ford dealership, Atascadero Ford.

Joseph D. Cusick, ’76 MS Cybernetic Systems, age 83, on March 27, 2013, in Los Gatos. A native of Chicago, Ill., Cusick was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Princeton. He was chief of operations at the Air Force Satellite Test Center in Sunnyvale when he retired in 1991. In 1995, he received the Stanford Associates Award. He was an active member of the Saratoga Men’s Club and Los Gatos Rotary.

Donald Davies, ’59 Business Administration, age 76, on June 4, 2013, in Los Gatos. A native of San Francisco, Davies was a stock broker and joined the Los Gatos Lions Club in 1965. He also served as president of the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce.

Alice Lorraine DeSmet, ’43 Education, age 92, on Sept. 22, 2013, in Saratoga. A San José native, DeSmet taught elementary school and was an active member of the Association of Republican Women. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Saratoga.

Ray Dolby, ’55, on Sept. 12, 2013, in San Francisco. A Korean War veteran and founder of Dolby Laboratories, Dolby was known for his innovations in noise reduction and surround sound technology. He received an electrical engineering degree from Stanford and his doctorate in physics from the University of Cambridge. He founded Dolby Laboratories in London in 1965. The company has been awarded 10 Academy Awards and 13 Emmy Awards.

Daniel Eells, Business, age 84, on Jan. 26. An Antioch native and Korean War veteran, Eells retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves at the rank of commander. As a civilian, he worked at Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale.

George Rogers Faxon, ’64 Chemistry, age 72, on Dec. 22, 2013, in San Jose. Faxon worked for Beech-Nut Nutrition Corporation for 26 years and served on the California Strawberry Commission.

Sally Felder, Accounting, age 67, on Dec. 31, 2013, in Fairfax, Va.

Robert Fisher, ’40 Business, age 95, on Feb. 6, in San Jose. A fourth generation resident of Santa Clara County and U.S. Army veteran, Fisher was stationed in India during the 1940s. As a civilian, he worked in the financial department of Food Machinery Corporation (FMC) in San Jose until his 1983 retirement. He was a member of Gamma Phi Sigma fraternity.

Beverly Rita Gallant, MA Health Science, age 82, on Dec. 5, 2013, in San José. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Gallant worked for Westinghouse Testing Services and ESL/TRW in Sunnyvale. She was a Santa Clara Senior Center volunteer and a member of the Church of the Ascension.

Lynda Diane Gentry, ’70 Education, age 69, on Oct. 12, 2013, in Soquel. A native of Exeter, Calif., Gentry retired as a teacher from Brook Knoll Elementary School in Scotts Valley and, with her husband, took up a career in commercial fishing. A member of the Santa Cruz Commercial Fisherman’s Association, she served for many years as the organization’s treasurer.

Calvin Robert Gintz, ’49 Psychology, age 89, on Dec. 27, 2013, in San Jose. A World War II veteran, Gintz worked for Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale for 30 years in the company’s Space Shuttle program.

Nancy Jean Goerz, ’67 Spanish, age 69, on Dec. 28, 2013, in Lantana, Texas. A native of San Francisco, Goerz was a flight attendant for Pan American Airways and later taught German at Johansen High School in Modesto.

Yvonne Gordon, Psychology, age 90, in September 2013. A Chicago native, Gordon was a First United Methodist Church of Sunnyvale lay minister and retired from Siliconix.

Mary Gratton, Nursing, age 56, on Jan. 9. A native of Napa, Gratton worked for 18 years in cardiac care, then joined the Peace Corps, living three years in Gambia. Back in the U.S., she worked for Cardiovascular Consultants in Walnut Creek and Oakland. She performed one week of service each year with the Sierra Club.

Janice Grodeon, ’70 MA Education, age 84, on Oct. 25, 2013, in Campbell. A native of Oakland, Grodeon taught social studies at Rolling Hills Junior High School in Los Gatos for 30 years and served as admission director for SJSU’s College of Education for 13 years.

Joan Elizabeth Gustavson, MA Counseling, age 71, on Dec. 4, 2013, in Southworth, Wash. A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Gustavson taught in Monterey for many years before moving to Southworth in 1995.

Mark D. Harrington, ’77 Environmental Studies, age 63, on Dec. 28, 2013, in Santa Rosa. A Red Cross volunteer, Harrington worked for 23 years as a safety engineer with the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

James Hatfield, ’63 Science, age 73, on Sept. 10, 2013, in Santa Cruz. A wedding, school and youth sports photographer, Hatfield was a native of Ellendale, N.D.

William Hauck, ’63 Social Science, age 73, on March 7, in Roseville. Former head of the California Business Roundtable, Hauck was one of the longest serving members of the CSU Board of Trustees. Appointed in 1993, he served as vice chair from 1996 to 1998 and as chair from 1998 to 2000. At the time of his death, he chaired the board’s Finance Committee. In 2010, he endowed the Trustee William Hauck Scholarship for SJSU students.

Betty Jeanne Hazel, ’75 MLS, age 82, on July 12, 2013, in Salem, Ore. A native of Idaho, Hazel worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in San Francisco early in her career. Between 1974 and 1986, she was a senior administrator for the San Jose Public Library system. She later directed the Douglas County Library System in Roseburg, Ore.

Mary Lou Hernandez, ’02 Sociology, age 38, on July 31, 2013. A native of Santa Maria, Hernandez taught at Washington Elementary in San José. At SJSU, she was a member of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlán) and the inaugural cohort of INVST (International & National Voluntary Service Training program).

William Himstreet, ’47 Marketing, age 91, on Jan. 16, in Bellevue, Wash. A native of Milford, Utah, Himstreet served as a U.S. Navy airship pilot and aerial navigation instructor during World War II. He taught at the University of Southern California from 1952 to 1982 and received the 2003 Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award from USC. The author of more than 20 textbooks and monographs, he served as national president of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity and as a trustee of Woodbury University in Burbank.

Barbara Billing Hunt, ’53 Occupational Therapy, age 82, on April 13, 2013, in Penn Valley. Hunt retired as an occupational therapist in 1986. She was a member of Alpha Phi sorority.

Lyle Hunt Jr., ’54 Criminal Justice Administration, age 84, on Dec. 14, 2013, in Penn Valley. An Alameda native and Korean War veteran, Hunt worked for the San Jose Police Department for 30 years, retiring as a captain in 1986. The 1953 National AAU Judo Champion, he represented the U.S. in the International Judo Tournament in Paris. He was a member of Chi Phi Sigma fraternity.

Teresa Gulermovich Illinitch, MSW, age 50, on Feb. 14, in Chapel Hill, N.C. A native of San Jose, Illinitch was a professor, clinical instructor and field advisor in UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Social Work. Previously she worked for the state of North Carolina’s Division of Health and Human Services.

Joseph Jonathan Jacobs, ’51 Physical Education, age 87, on Dec. 15, 2013. A San Francisco native and U.S. Army veteran, Jacobs taught and coached at Manteca High School for more than 30 years. Also a real estate agent, he founded Jacobs Realty in the 1970s.

Jules Jammal, ’06 BFA in Animation/ Illustration, age 39, on  Feb. 11. A native of San José, Jammal was always a very talented artist with a passion for education and helping others. His academic studies began with animation history at DeAnza College. He moved onto San Jose State, where he served as a president of the award-winning Shrunken Head Man Animation and Illustration Club, which became a stepping stone towards his role as a lecturer of animation. He earned his BFA from San Jose State University and took an internship at PDI/DreamWorks. This experience opened another door into gaining a character animation degree from Animation Mentor. Jammal came back to San Jose State to serve as a lecturer until he passed away in 2014. He would often say, “there is no great reward like seeing my students achieve their goals upon graduation.”

 James Jerome Jensen, ’79 Mechanical Engineering, age 64, on Aug. 15, 2013, in Monroe, Ore. Before moving to Oregon, Jensen worked for General Electric in San José. He retired from Datalogic in 2007.

Joy Johnson, ’64 Physical Education, age 86, on Nov. 4, 2013, in New York. The oldest woman to run the New York City marathon, Johnson completed her 25th marathon the day before she died.

Richard Kimball, ’71 Industrial and Systems Engineering, on Feb. 19, in Palo Alto.

Alice Ruth King, ’55 Education, age 82, on Nov. 24, 2013, in Jacksonville, Ore. King was a volunteer for the March of Dimes, Ashland Community Hospital and the Hirsch Elementary School library in Fremont. She also served as a deacon at Jacksonville Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years.

Paul T. Kinney, ’51 Social Science, age 87, on Nov. 14, 2012, in Chico. A U.S. Army and World War II veteran, Kinney was captured by the Germans and retained as a POW until 1945. He began his academic career as an assistant professor of finance at the University of Illinois – Urbana. He later taught at CSU Fullerton and also served as dean of the School of Business Administration. He retired from Chico State University in 1986.

Clara Mae Kralj, Teaching Credential, age 80, on Aug. 2, 2013, in Sunnyvale. An educator for 40 years, Kralj was a member of Soroptimist International and the American Association of University Women.

Carlos Landeros, Business, age 48, on Dec. 24, 2013, in San Jose. Landeros was a native of Guanajuato, Mexico.

Ethel Wulff Lange, ’44 Music, age 91, on Jan. 5, in El Cajon. A native of Azusa, Lange taught music in the Brawley Elementary School District and was a member of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. She also served as concert mistress of the Imperial Valley Symphony Orchestra until 2009.

Moses Arispe Leon, Criminal Justice, age 77, on Jan 28, in Tucson, Ariz. A New York native, Leon taught justice studies at Pima Community College for 20 years, retiring in 1999.

Michael Joseph Lombardo, ’00 Electrical Engineering, age 35, on Sept. 19, 2013, in Pleasanton. Lombardo worked at Exar Corporation in Fremont as a computer hardware design engineer from 2002 to 2012 and at Altera Corporation in San Jose.

Kenneth Boyd Lopez, ’66, age 71, on Sept. 10, 2013, in Brentwood.

James Harvey McCammon Jr., ’60 Biological Science, age 78, on Nov. 14, 2013, in Monterey. A native of Oakland, McCammon taught at Andrew Hill High School in San José for 34 years. After retirement, he volunteered as a docent at Garland Park and Point Lobos.

Muriel McGlynn, Education, age 90, on Feb. 18, in Ventura. A native of San Jose and member of the San Francisco Society of Pioneers, McGlynn taught and served as a counselor at various elementary and secondary schools before retiring to raise her family. She later taught in migrant education programs in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Ventura.

Cheryl McNamara, ’50 Physical Education, on Nov. 6, 2013, in San Carlos. A professional dancer, McNamara taught PE at Carlmont High School and Cañada College. She also taught dance at the Red Morton Center in Redwood City.

Thomas Clark Mitchell, ’57 Geography, age 78, on Dec. 10, 2013, in San Jose. A native of San Mateo, Mitchell served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 11 years. He worked in Santa Clara County’s Department of Planning and Development for 28 years, retiring in 1993. A member of the World Festival Choir, he performed under the direction of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra with Luciano Pavarotti in Italy in 1990.

Dennis Moreira, ’68 English, age 69, on Sept. 19, 2013, in San Jose. An Oakland native, Moreira taught in the Alum Rock School District for more than 30 years.

Donald Newhall, ’52 Humanities, age 82, on March 28, 2013, in Redwood Estates. Newhall was a retired U.S. Air Force colonel.

Jeanice Owens, ’42 Education, on July 7, 2013. A native of San Jose, Owens was the first female president of the board of Santa Clara County’s Goodwill Industries and past president of the San Jose Woman’s Club. She also raised funds for the American Red Cross. At San Jose State, she was a member of Delta Omega sorority.

Thomas Patock, ’60 Business, age 76, on Jan. 26, in Pleasant Hill. A native of San Jose, Patock retired as a purchasing agent from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Paul Vincent Perrin Jr., ’61 Journalism, age 78, on Dec. 7, 2013, in Stockton. A descendant of two pioneer Lodi families, Perrin served in the U.S. Army for three years. A reporter and editor at The Stockton Record (now The Record) for 15 years, he later served as executive director of Stockton’s Arts Commission.

George Wallace Porter, ’52 Physical Education, age 83, on March 7, 2013, in Sacramento. Captain of San Jose State’s 1952 football team, Porter played professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles for one year. Later he taught and coached at Jackson High School in Jackson, Calif., and at Monterey Peninsula College. He served as assistant football coach at both Washington State University and Utah State. He retired as a Grant Union High School District administrator in 1983.

Donald Craig Raney, ’37 Chemistry, age 98, on Oct. 24, 2013, in Ventura. Raney began his teaching career in 1939 in Nevada City. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and taught navigation at the Midshipmen’s School. After World War II, he taught chemistry for 32 years at the College of the Sequoias, the College of San Mateo and Cañada College in Redwood City. He retired in 1975.

Drucilla Mercedes Redwine, ’74 English, age 64, on Nov. 5, 2013, in San Jose. A San Jose native, Redwine worked in the Admissions and Records Office at SJSU for 16 years prior to a 21-year career at San Jose Water Company. Since 2002, she served as the company’s superintendent of customer service.

Joseph Richerts, ’52 Biology, age 86, on Dec. 24, 2013, in Newtown, Pa. A native of Pacific Grove and U.S. Navy veteran, Richerts served in Guam from 1945 to 1946. From 1962 to 1984, he worked in sales and marketing.

Michael Edward Ricks, ’75 Management, age 68, on Dec. 23, 2013, in Shawnee, Okla. A native of San Diego, Ricks received a master’s degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. As a Southern Baptist minister, he served churches in California, Colorado and Arkansas.

Hugh Fredrick Riddell, ’65 Teaching Credential, age 72, on May 31, 2013, in Cupertino. A native of Detroit, Riddell taught for 37 years at Mountain View High School. He served on the boards of the El Camino YMCA and Amazing Creations Preschool and was an active member of the Cupertino Rotary Club.

Paul Ridgeway, ’60 Business, age 76, on Jan. 11, in San Francisco. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, and U.S. Air Force veteran, Ridgeway worked for the Canteen Corporation for 26 years and later as president of Easterday Janitorial Supply Company in San Francisco. He retired in 2001.

Art Robbins, Chemistry, age 81, on June 15, 2013. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and U.S. Air Force veteran, Robbins served as a radio operator during the Korean War. During his civilian career, he worked as a chemist and a biomedical instrumentation salesman. He founded three companies, including Art Robbins Instruments in Sunnyvale.

Concetta “Connie” Roberts, ’72 Home Economics, age 79, on July 23, 2013, in Saratoga. A native of Illinois, Roberts taught in San José’s Mt. Pleasant School District and Union Elementary School District. She volunteered at the Los Gatos Community Hospital and was a member of the Montalvo Service Group.

Adele Janelle Rossie-Long, ’62, age 73, in Belmont. At SJSU, Rossie-Long was a member of Alpha Phi sorority.

Lila May Roth, Elementary Education, age 90, on Dec. 4, 2013, in King City. Roth taught school in Lockwood before her marriage and later served on the King City High School board. A founding member of the San Antonio Valley Historical Association, she also served as president of the San Antonio Community Betterment Association.

Rebecca Ann Rouillard, ’98 MLIS, age 56, on Jan. 4, in Happy Valley, Ore. Rouillard worked as a librarian at Snake River Correctional Institution before retiring in 2006.

Harry Salgado, ’73 Political Science, age 67, on Feb. 14, in San Jose. A U.S. Navy veteran, Salgado taught and coached for 35 years in the Berryessa Union School District.

Joseph Sapena, ’50 Philosophy, age 92, on Dec. 7, 2013, in Santa Clara. A U.S. Navy and World War II veteran, Sapena taught social studies for 20 years before retiring.

Cynthia Savage, ’86 Marketing, age 55, on Dec. 8, 2013. A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Savage was a member of Eta Phi Beta sorority at San Jose State.

Leonard Schlussel, ’59 MA Education, age 87, on Sept. 22, 2013, in San Jose. A San Francisco native and World War II veteran, Schlussel served in the U.S. Army’s 100th Division. After the war, he served for 10 years in the Army Reserves. He was a teacher and administrator in the East Side Union High School District in San Jose for 36 years.

Joseph Monroe Schreckenghaust, ’88 Marketing, age 51, on Oct. 22, 2013, in Campbell. A native of Palo Alto, Schreckenghaust worked as the safety manager for the city of Palo Alto.

Judith Schweikert, MA Education, age 74, on Dec. 9, 2013, in Park City, Utah. A New Hampshire native, Schweikert most recently worked for the Park City History Museum.

Harold F. Sebring Jr., ’53 Science, on Jan. 28, 2012, in Redding. Sebring worked for the U.S. Forest Service.

Helen B. Sharp, ’49 Recreation, age 87, on Oct. 18, 2013, in Visalia. Sharp taught elementary school for 33 years and trained 4-H guide dogs.

Letitia Showen, ’72 Recreation, age 64, on March 7, 2013, in Redwood City. Showen served in the Peace Corps in Venezuela and later taught ESL in San Jose. She was a member of the Congregational Church of San Mateo.

Ronald E. Staley, ’48 Physical Education, age 87, on Dec. 23, 2013, in Santa Cruz. During his 36-year career in education, Staley served as coach, teacher, counselor dean of students and vice principal at Watsonville High School. A native of Turlock, he was a member of Aptos Community United Methodist Church.

Carol Louise Stepanovich, ’63 Speech Pathology/Elementary Education, age 71, on May 8, 2013, in Bakersfield. Stepanovich began her teaching career in Bakersfield schools and retired from the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District in 2001.

Richard Stone Jr., ’57 Electrical Engineering, age 83, on Nov. 13, 2013, in San Jose. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Stone worked for GE for 42 years.

Helen Dasbach Straight, ’43 Education, age 92, on June 18, 2013, in Grass Valley. A native of Monterey, Straight taught in the Glendora Unified School District and later at Goddard Junior High School for almost 25 years. Past president of the Covina Lioness Club, she received the organization’s Melvin Jones Fellow Award for her service. She served on the board of the Visiting Nurses Association and directed the San Gabriel Valley Assistance League’s learning center.

Larry Stuefloten, ’59, age 75, on Sept. 2, 2013. Former deputy chief of the San Jose Police Department, Stuefloten retired in 1987 after 28 years of service.

Stephen Tarangelo, ’81 Microbiology/Environmental Health, age 59, on Sept. 8, 2013, in Wake Forest, N.C. A New York native, Tarangelo owned and operated La Foresta Italian Café and Pizzeria.

Macie Martin Taylor, ’75 Education, on Feb.17, in Los Gatos.

Richard B. Thompson, Biology, age 87, on Aug. 25, 2013, in Yakima, Wash. A native of Fresno and U.S. Army veteran, Thompson served in the Philippines during World War II. He worked as fisheries biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He retired in 1989.

Alder G. Thurman, ’38 Business, age 96, on Jan. 14, 2013, in Fort Bragg.

James Roland Tormey Jr., ’57 Social Science, age 78, on Oct. 5, 2013, in Medford, Ore. A native of San Jose, Tormey received a law degree from Santa Clara University in 1960 and practiced law in San Mateo until his 1997 retirement. Elected to the board of trustees of San Mateo Community College in 1971, he was also a founding director of the Borel Bank & Trust Company (now Boston Private Bank & Trust).

Antonio Toves, Accounting, age 79, on Aug. 14, 2013, in San Jose. Toves grew up on the island of Guam and graduated from SJSU while working at GTE Sylvania. He continued to work at the company for more than 25 years until his retirement.

Louis Joseph Tully, ’73 MA Physical Education, age 70, on Dec. 17, 2013, in Twain Harte.

Elwood Veregge, ’44 Electrical Engineering, age 90, on June 1, 2013, in Gardnerville. A native of Stockton and SJSU track team captain, Veregge joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the outbreak of World War II. After his military service, he worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company on the successful design, fabrication and development of the satellite and Polaris missile systems program. He retired from Hughes Aircraft Company in 1987.

Gladys Vroom, ’48 Journalism, age 88, on Oct. 23, 2013, in Cupertino. A native or San Francisco, Vroom taught kindergarten in San José for many years.

Colleen Rumley Watson, English, age 82, on Dec. 8, 2013, in Visalia. A Montana native, Watson taught high school English and drama and adult education acting classes. She was a charter member of Schola Cantorum, a choral arts organization.

Sylvia Jane Whitmire, ’45 Art, on Jan. 30, in Los Alamitos.

Muriel Wiser, Education, age 93, on Dec. 20, 2013, in Watsonville. An Oregon native, Wiser was a member of the First Baptist Church in Watsonville.

Paul Allan Woods Jr., ’68 Industrial Management, age 67, on Dec. 13, 2013, in Playa Del Rey. A native of San Marino, Woods had a 40-year career as an equity analyst and portfolio manager in the securities industry. He formed his own company, Odyssey Advisors LLC, in 2000.

Faculty

Michael Abrams, age 69, on Nov. 1, 2013, in San Jose. A native of Chicago, Ill., Abrams received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and his doctorate in psychology from the University of Toronto in 1975. He began his teaching career at the University of Manitoba and taught in SJSU’s Department of Psychology as a lecturer from 2006 until his death.

Carol Haws, age 80, on Jan. 14, in Farr West, Utah. A native of Maricopa, Haws received her bachelor’s degree in dance from the University of Utah in 1957 and her master’s in physical education in 1959 from UCLA. She worked for 27 years in SJSU’s Department of Women’s Physical Education and was promoted to professor in 1972. After retired from teaching in 1986, she continued to direct and choreograph dance recitals at various Bay Area community theatres.

Clifford Johnson, age 89, on Aug. 21, 2013, in Santa Clara. A native of Illinois and U.S. Air Force veteran, Johnson received his bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., in 1945 and his master’s degree in library science from Columbia University in 1957. In 1976, he left a post at New York’s 42nd Street Library to come to California. He became a librarian at SJSU in 1978 and retired in 1989.

T.J. Kerr, age 64, on May 24, 2013, in Bakersfield. A member of SJSU’s Sports Hall of Fame, Kerr graduated from SJSU in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and joined the wrestling coaching staff a week after his 23rd birthday. In his 12 seasons as head coach of SJSU’s wrestling program, the Spartans won 10 conference championships and Kerr was named Pacific Coast Athletic Association Coach of the Year seven times. After leaving SJSU, he served as CSU Bakersfield’s head wrestling coach from 1984 to 2010.

Marsha Kertz, age 67, on Feb. 11, in San Jose. A CPA and member of the National Society of Tax Professionals, Kertz was a lecturer in the Department of Accounting in 1977.

Bishun Khare, age 80, on Aug. 20, 2013. A native of Varanasi, India, Khare received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Banaras Hindu University and his doctorate in physics from Syracuse University in 1961. For more than 30 years, he worked at Cornell University and published almost 100 papers with Carl Sagan. In 1996, he joined NASA Ames as a Senior National Research Fellow and in 1998 began work with the SETI Institute. He was an adjunct professor in SJSU’s Department of Physics from 2005 to 2007.

Richard Mesa, age 84, on Jan. 2. A native of Santa Monica, Mesa was a pitcher in the Pacific Coast League in the 1950s and played winter ball in Mexico, Venezuela and Panama. While teaching English at Sunnyvale High School, he worked as a scout for the New York Mets. He received his master’s degree in education from Stanford in 1970 and taught as a lecturer in SJSU’s Department of Secondary Education from 1970 to 1972.

Alex Rudavsky, age 89, on Feb. 26, in Pebble Beach. A native of Poland, Rudavsky came to the U.S. in the late 1940s and studied at the University of Minnesota. He joined SJSU’s Department of Civil Engineering in 1960 and taught hydraulics and water resources until his retirement in 1986. In 1965, he opened Hydro Research Science, a research and consulting company that created more than 200 hydraulic modeling structures, including dams and spillways. His company contributed to modeling the hydraulics of San Francisco’s Pier 39 and the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in Pendleton.

Ernest Unwin, age 79, on Sept. 17, 2013, in Los Osos. A native of Victoria, British Columbia, Unwin received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1956 and his doctorate in systems engineering from the University of Arizona in 1968. He taught at Santa Clara University prior to joining SJSU’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 1972. He received tenure in 1983 and, that same year, was appointed department chair. He retired in 2001.

Betty Wayne Walker, age 89, on May 30, 2013, in Los Altos. A native of Burbank, Walker was a member of the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. She received a bachelor’s degree in biological science from SJSU in 1949 and completed a year of graduate work at UC Berkeley. A certified public health microbiologist, she taught as a lecturer in SJSU’s Department of Biological Sciences from 1961 to 1986.
