I’ve read half of this book and feel that it would not work for our program. Similar to Coates’ “Between Me and the World,” it’s a valuable book that helps the reader understand how the author experiences daily micro- and macro- racialized aggressions. I believe this book would be a valuable addition to classes in which the faculty member provides a conceptual framework for approaching and experiencing the book. It lacks an over-arching narrative structure, however, which would make it challenging for our readers.
The book is short, easy to read, and has a variety of experiences presented in prose and poetry. The story about Serena Williams is quite moving. The illustrations are interesting.
Unfortunately, because it has no “story” it might not appeal to young readers.
