This NOT a read for the program. With the vulgarities, violence and stereotyping it is like reading a bad “B” movie script. The water shortage as a background is lost. IF I were reading this for myself, I would have put it down before page 50.

  3. The Water Knife is a complex novel that depicts a world where everyone in the West–California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado are fighting for water and using any means–legal and illegal to get access to water rights. The main protagonist, Angel is the water knife for Cathleen Case, manager for the Nevada Water agency. The novel opens with Angel destroying a water processing company on the border of Arizona on a midnight run before the city can file legal paperwork in the morning. The novel turns on the relationship of Angel, the water knife with an award-winning journalist, Lucy, and a third character, Maria, a Texas woman who escaped to Arizona and finds herself beset with the task of survival. While Angel is tasked with trying to find the existence of Arizona’s water rights from the 1800’s, Lucy finds herself falling into a relationship with Angel as she struggles between her own awareness that she can walk away from all the chaos, while her reporting instincts keep her engaged in the search for the story. The novel abounds with violence, and there are a couple of graphic sex scenes. The author presents a unique way of examining the issues of water rights, personal and moral dilemmas, the truths, and ultimately survival. It was a fast read.
