This fascinating, well-written book describes the essential role that cod played in European and American economies since the 15th century. It ranges widely and deeply over such topics as the discovery of the North American continent (the Basque were one of the early discoverers; they did not talk about their discovery because they wanted to keep the cod to themselves!), the development and decline of fishing industries, and the decline of fish populations throughout the world. The book reflects the author’s obsession with his topic, and as such is not the best book to select for a campus reading program. However, I do recommend it to committee members who appreciate a good book!
