I hope many of you had the opportunity to see Spartan success in action at one of our inspiring spring commencement ceremonies. We now have over 10,000 new alumni — with more than 7,500 graduates in spring 2022 and 2,500 in fall 2021 — proudly holding diplomas from San José State University.
As the spring semester comes to a close, I am eagerly looking forward to an awesome week of commencement ceremonies. It’s a great week to be a Spartan! We’re so excited and grateful to be able to share this incredible time with our 2022 graduating class as well as with their families, friends and other loved ones.
It is with deep sadness that I report to you the passing of Brian Bates, who recently left SJSU after a memorable and impactful 15-year tenure at our campus. Brian served in several leadership roles in alumni relations throughout his career in higher education and, in addition to his substantial duties in alumni relations at San José State, most recently guided his team with the management and logistics of SJSU’s commencement ceremonies.
As students return to campus and continue to settle into the new semester, I have some great news to share: We will be conducting fully in-person commencement events for our spring and summer graduates!
As we continue to bask in last week’s joyous in-person Commencement ceremonies and prepare for a well-deserved holiday break, I find myself reflecting on all that has taken place during my tenure as SJSU president. Perhaps it is that nostalgia that we experience when one special chapter in our life comes to an end.
