Call for Community in Light of Recent Racist Attacks Against African-Americans

These past few months have been very difficult for all of us. But with recent national news reports centering on the violent killing of George Floyd by a police officer on Memorial Day and the dangerous racial profiling of Christian Cooper in Central Park, the last several days have been particularly painful for many members of the SJSU community.

To date, SJSU does not have a confirmed case of COVID-19 identified in our own community. The campus leadership has been in consultation with the California State University (CSU) Chancellor Timothy White, other senior leaders in the CSU Office, as well as public health officials. As a public university, we must continue to follow the guidelines of the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health and the guidelines of the California Department of Public Health.

How can higher education most effectively make use of today’s technology? It is a straightforward question, yet stunningly complex at the same time. At SJSU, we embrace technological innovation and are especially keen to look at ways in which technology can help our students and our campus operations. At the same time, however, I have been examining the more challenging aspects of technology, particularly as they relate to colleges and universities.
