Brian Bates, Former AVP for Alumni and Community Engagement, Passes Away

Dear SJSU faculty and staff,

It is with deep sadness that I report to you the passing of Brian Bates, who recently left SJSU after a memorable and impactful 15-year tenure at our campus. Brian served in several leadership roles in alumni relations throughout his career in higher education and, in addition to his substantial duties in alumni relations at San José State, most recently guided his team with the management and logistics of SJSU’s commencement ceremonies. Our hearts are with his family and friends.

Brian was a warm, caring individual who put his heart and soul into his work. I imagine there are countless SJSU alumni and supporters of our university who were touched in some way by his efforts, so Brian leaves behind an extraordinary legacy.

Brian Bates

Heartbreaking news such as this hurts. I would encourage you to care for yourselves and one another as we grapple with the loss of this dear colleague and friend. He will not be forgotten.

Thank you for all you do and please take care,

Steve Perez
Interim President
