CSU’s Message regarding Budget Updates and Potential Layoffs

Dear SJSU faculty and staff,

By now, we are all aware of the ongoing uncertainties and financial impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic has created. Virtually every element of the global economy, including the state of California and the California State University (CSU) system, has been impacted.

I remain committed to doing everything I can to protect everyone’s positions while ensuring the financial health and stability of our university. Having said that, the Governor recently signed the 2020-21 state budget which cut $299 million to the CSU. As a result, all CSU campuses, including San José State, will see a significant reduction in budget allocations. These cuts have also compelled the CSU Office of the Chancellor to task campuses with implementing the layoff provisions set forth in the various collective bargaining agreements with our unions. To be clear, layoffs are the least preferred option; as such, the Office of the Chancellor has invited union leaders to a dialogue to discuss potential mitigation opportunities.

I know that the staff and faculty of San José State are a dedicated group of educators and professionals. You give our students the opportunities they need to succeed, and you help prepare them for the next phase of their lives. I remain grateful for your time and talent you have dedicated to our students’ success, and I will continue to be your advocate as we navigate these trying times together.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mary A. Papazian
President
