Spartans at Work: At Twitter, I Am “More Sensitive Toward the Different Perspectives” of Other Cultures

By Sarah Kyo, Web Communications Specialist

(This summer, SJSU Today hits the road, visiting students and recent grads on the job across the country and around the world. Our Spartans at Work series continues with mass communications alumna Carolina Janssen.)

Where will an SJSU degree take you? How about a job with one of the hottest, most influential companies in the world? Carolina Janssen, ’10 Mass Communications, is part of Twitter’s International Market Development team, helping this San Francisco-headquartered service reach the rest of the world.

“I never understood how much work it really is to bring a product that was created in this country and make it work in another country,” Janssen said. “It’s not just doing the same thing there. You have to really change a lot of really small things.”

Janssen, a German native, started working at Twitter two years ago as Localization and International Support for German-speaking users. Now she is part of a diverse team, conducting market analysis, and credits her alma mater for preparing her for this role. Janssen had lived at SJSU International House, a dormitory for U.S. and international students. She also worked at I-House and at Studies in American Language, now known as International Gateways.

“San Jose State is an obviously very international university, and I think just living in this environment of people from all over the world for two years prepared me perfectly for particularly the position that I got at Twitter,” she said. “I think it also made me more sensitive toward the different perspectives that different cultures have.”

You can follow Janssen on Twitter at @lija.

Spartans at Work: At The Walt Disney Family Museum, I’m “Inspired to Keep Pursuing My Own Goals”

By Sarah Kyo, Web Communications Specialist

(This summer, SJSU Today hits the road, visiting students and recent grads on the job across the country and around the world. Our Spartans at Work series continues with animation/illustration major Alex Turner.)

Where will an SJSU degree take you? How about to a place that celebrates one of the most influential people in your field? Alex Turner, ’14, Animation/Illustration major is an education intern at The Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio of San Francisco.

From the outside, the museum’s building matches the surrounding red-brick structures not far from the Golden Gate Bridge. Inside, it contains historic artifacts from Disney’s life and the classic Disney animations, films and television programs.

Turner said he feels inspired to come to work, drawing in his sketchbook as he commutes on the Caltrain every weekday. At the museum, he helps inspire a younger generation’s creativity and imagination at the museum’s Disney Discovery Summer Camp. Each week-long session revolves around a different topic, such as animation, comics books and designing theme park rides.

Once camp wraps up in early August, Turner will apply his skills in helping the museum redesign its website. The SJSU animation/illustration program gave him a great foundation for his internship.

“I feel like I have pretty strong fundamentals in art and animation,” he said, “and what we’re doing at the camp at The Walt Disney Family Museum, I’ve been able to apply a lot of those skills like either design or painting, you know, or just being organized.”

Cube Satellite Launches to International Space Station

By Sarah Kyo, Web Communications Specialist

TechEdSat, a NASA-sponsored cube satellite that SJSU aerospace engineering students have worked on, launched from Japan to the International Space Station.

NASA TV began its live-stream coverage on Friday, July 20, 6:15 p.m. PDT. Then 7:06 p.m. was the official launch of the Japanese transfer vehicle, which contains TechEdSat and four other cube satellites from international universities and organizations.

“Cubesats have been around, but this is the first ever deployed from the space station, thus it has to meet all the ISS requirements,” said Professor Periklis Papadopoulos, who also works at NASA Ames Research Center and served as a technical advisor on the project. “This has not been done before. Some of those requirements we had to help them define since there was no precedence.”

Normally, projects that are sent to the International Space Station take four and a half years to complete, said graduate student and system engineer Ali Guarneros Luna, but TechEdSat was completed in about nine months. The student team was responsible for designing and integrating the cube satellite’s system, as well as performing various tests and making sure it passed the standards of both the International Space Station and NASA.

In a NASA news release, Andres Martinez, program manager for Small Spacecraft Payloads and Technologies at Ames, said TechEdSat “will allow a group of very talented aerospace engineering students from San Jose State University to experience a spaceflight project from formulation through decommission of a small spacecraft.”

If this mission is successful, then it may lead to future cube satellites with a similar communication system.

Spartans at Work: At NASA Ames, “I’m Pursuing My Childhood Dream”

By Sarah Kyo, Web Communications Specialist

(This summer, SJSU Today hits the road, visiting students and recent grads on the job across the country and around the world. Our Spartans at Work series continues with aerospace engineering graduate Ali Guarneros Luna.)

Where will an SJSU degree take you? How about beyond the Earth’s atmosphere? While Ali Guarneros Luna, ’10, ’12 Aerospace Engineering, has her feet on the ground as a systems engineer for NASA Ames Research Center, she has been involved in projects that have made it to outer space.

Guarneros Luna lead an SJSU student team that worked on the cube satellite, TechEdSat, one of five cube satellites, or cubesats, being transported to the International Space Station. A transfer vehicle containing the cubesats, additional experiments and supplies launched from Japan at 7:06 p.m. PDT July 20. TechEdSat is the first NASA cube satellite that will orbit the earth after being launched from the International Space Station.

Becoming an aerospace engineer was a childhood dream for Guarneros Luna, who grew up in Mexico.

“I read something, I saw something on TV when I was probably five or seven years old, and it just impacted me,” she said.

She earned her current job after interning at NASA Ames during her last year of undergraduate studies, where she made connections with SJSU faculty members who also worked at that research center.

“I was just lucky enough that … San Jose State University gave me the opportunity to pursue the dream that I had when I was growing up,” she said.

What do Cisco, KPMG and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have in common?

They all have offices in Paris, and a group of SJSU students have visited them within the last week!

This is part of a faculty-led program by Associate Professor Mathew Cabot of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Cabot has been tweeting photos and using the hashtag #SJSUParis during this trip called “Exploring the World of International Public Relations: Paris, France.”

According to the program’s website, future destinations include Versailles, the Champagne region, Louis Vuitton corporate headquarters and a one-day excursion to Brussels.

“Because the public relations profession has gone global, our public relations, advertising and marketing students need to ‘go global’ as well,” according to the program description. “This course is designed to introduce students to the world of international strategic communications, give them a first-hand experience of overseas work and expose them to the challenges and opportunities in intercultural communication.”

Another aspect of the program is learning more about corporate social responsibility. The students experienced what some Cisco employees are doing on their office rooftops: urban beekeeping! They donned protective clothing and learned about efforts to support the endangered bee population. Sales from the honey support Man and the Environment, a non-governmental organization based in Madagascar that specializes in “sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.”

Graduations often bring family members together, and the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences Convocation was no exception. Photo by Christina Olivas.

(This week, SJSU Today’s small but mighty band of writers and photographers took a peek at graduation receptions and convocations campuswide so we could share with you the excitement of the more than 8,000 members of the Class of 2012. We’ll post more photos on Facebook.)

A blue-and-yellow candy buffet greeted guests at the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences convocation on May 25. Once inside Morris Dailey Auditorium, graduates’ families and friends faced a stage with rows of silver chairs. Soon they would be face to face with their loved ones, who were dressed in caps and gowns.

“They are looking good, aren’t they?” said Department Chair Michael Kimbarow of this year’s graduates.

One student speaker, master’s degree candidate Jessica Abawag, said she and her fellow classmates endured this journey at SJSU for the same purpose.

“We are here to change the lives of others,” she said.

A fitting representation of why these Spartans pursued this field was keynote speaker Lateef McLeod, a poet who’s also a grant writer and blogger for the United Cerebral Palsy of the Golden Gate.

McLeod, who has cerebral palsy, gave his speech with an iPad app called Proloquo2Go. The app transformed a text file he originally typed on his Macbook into an audio recording with a male human voice.

He talked about the different Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices he had used throughout his life and the people who have worked with him. He encouraged the graduates to listen to their future clients.

“It is ultimately their communication that you’re facilitating,” McLeod said.

His speech concluded with one of his poems, “Wall,” to illustrate the importance of the work that the graduates will soon be doing.

“I yell myself hoarse like a bullfrog / but I cannot get my family and friends to get close to me / so they really know / my dreams, thoughts, desires, and feelings,” he recited. “I shiver behind this clear wall / and wait for someone to notice me / wait for a chance to speak.”

“Global Citizens” Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering

By Sarah Kyo, Web Communications Specialist

Excitement and anticipation is in the air at the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering Convocation (Christina Olivas photo).

(This week, SJSU Today’s small but mighty band of writers and photographers took a peek at graduation receptions and convocations campuswide so we could share with you the excitement of the more than 8,000 members of the Class of 2012. We’ll post more photos on Facebook.)

As family and friends filed into the Event Center on the afternoon of May 25, a slideshow presentation displayed the faces of Spartans from the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering.

These were just a sample of the Class of 2012. Belle Wei, the Don Beall Dean of Engineering, would shake hands with more than 700 bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients that day.

Student speaker Killol Acharya, one of the 2012 Outstanding Graduating Seniors, encouraged his fellow classmates to become “global citizens.”

“I hope today we expand the definition of success to service, caring and social responsibility,” he said.

Acharya said there was a time when he thought success only meant wealth, power and titles. During his time at SJSU, something changed within him as he became more involved on campus and in his community. With all of the problems in the world, he encouraged his classmates to use their knowledge and skills to help those who are less fortunate.

“We’re finally engineers,” Acharya said. “We can fix this, right?” Spartans responded with cheers.

The college’s ability to attract international talent to Silicon Valley was showcased at convocation. Many members of the crowd expressed their delight when a graduate proudly held India’s flag in the air when it was his turn to walk across the stage.

The icing on the cake — both figuratively and literally — was a dessert reception in the Engineering Lobby. This was a sweet ending to the graduates’ time at SJSU.

Justice Studies Convocation Celebrates Individuals

Graduates get excited at the Justice Studies Convocation in Morris Dailey Auditorium (Dillon Adams photo).

(This week, SJSU Today’s small but mighty band of writers and photographers will take a peek at graduation receptions and convocations campuswide so we can share with you the excitement of the more than 8,000 members of the Class of 2012. We begin the series with the Department of Justice Studies. We’ll post more photos on Facebook.)

From the stage, Department Chair Mark Correia videotaped Justice Studies graduates as they entered Morris Dailey Auditorium on May 16 to the familiar sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Each graduate had a personalized moment when it was his or her turn to walk across the stage after being called by name. Master’s degree candidates were each hooded by his or her main adviser. Each undergraduate had the option of writing a brief message about his or her post-graduation plans or giving a shout out to loved ones, which were read aloud.

One of the faculty members who read graduates’ names was lecturer Janet Hagemann, who is retiring at the end of this semester. Hagemann, ’81 Criminal Justice Administration, received recognition from the U.S. Secret Service and the Justice Studies Department. Her honors and gifts included plaques, a bouquet of flowers, a lifetime university parking permit and a donation to the animal non-profit organization of her choice.

Hagemann and Correia both share a Scottish heritage. To everyone’s surprise, Correia removed his robe and walked away from the podium to reveal a traditional outfit, including a kilt. It inspired @mewissa’s tweet, “BEST CONVOCATION EVER.”

The festivities were just getting started as the upbeat song “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO ushered in the next stage of the graduates’ lives.

Shared memories and classes, whether challenging or rewarding, drew together psychology's 2012 graduates (Christina Olivas photo).

(This week, SJSU Today’s small but mighty band of writers and photographers took a peek at graduation receptions and convocations campuswide so we could share with you the excitement of the more than 8,000 members of the Class of 2012. We’ll post more photos on Facebook.)

From Spartans basketball to famous musicians, the Event Center hosts a variety of festivities that bring people together. On May 24, family and friends in the stands cheered for the Department of Psychology. Led by their faculty, the graduates entered the main floor from the home and visiting team entrances, forming two side-by-side lines as they walked down the center aisle to their seats.

In his opening address, psychology department Chair Ronald Rogers said the faculty’s goal was not to fill students’ heads with names, dates and equations.

“We trained you for very little, but we prepared you for everything,” he said.

Rogers drew some knowing laughter from the graduates when he mentioned a statistics and research methods course.

“It wasn’t just abuse,” he quipped.

Student speaker Yvette Szabo shared more inside jokes with the crowd. President of Psi Chi, the International Society in Psychology SJSU Chapter, Szabo said graduating seniors she talked to didn’t want to hear inspirational words at their convocation.

Instead, they reminisced over “no air conditioning” at Dudley Moorhead Hall, “distress at failing neuroscience” and happy hour at nearby Flames Eatery and Bar. Shared memories and classes, whether challenging or rewarding, drew them together.

“We have a background in psychology to prepare us for what’s next,” she said.

Graduates were not the only ones who received cheers and applause. Lecturer Russell Arias encouraged parents, husbands and wives to stand up, as they received recognition from the Spartans that they have supported over the years.

At the end, the master and bachelor degree recipients exited the Event Center together, side by side. They now share another quality: SJSU alumni.

Students Re-Invent the Wheel

Spherical Drive System team members Eamonn Clerkin, Henry Li, Max Ratner and Andrew Parmar (left to right) hold up parts of the frame for their motorcycle (Sarah Kyo photo).

Will Smith’s character drives a sleek car with spherical wheels in the sci-fi movie “I, Robot.” While this futuristic film is a fantasy, a team of Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering students is making a very similar vehicle a reality.

From conception to fruition, this group has spent more than a year on this ambitious senior project called Spherical Drive System: a self-balancing, electric motorcycle that uses spheres as wheels.

The team includes team manager Max Ratner, financial officer/mechanical designer Henry Li, and lead mechanical designer Andrew Parmar.

While brainstorming project ideas, the team came across a YouTube video of a robot that balances on a ball. Parmar said they combined other inspirations, such as the Segway Personal Transporter and the “I, Robot” car, for their final concept.

Sphere’s benefits

Riding a motorcycle involves balance and some level of instability. They said a sphere has benefits over a typical wheel.

“It has an inherent safety factor,” Li said. “It’s able to help you balance on the bike.”

This computer rendering showcases the final design for Spherical Drive System (Image courtesy of Spherical Drive System).

Ball transfer units, which are small ball bearings, keep the spheres moving. Spheres allow omnidirectional movement, meaning that this motorcycle could move in any direction, including backwards and sideways.

Li said they decided to build a motorcycle because “it captures people’s imagination.”  The team can imagine similar, spherical technology used in other areas, including wheelchairs, forklifts and amusement park rides.

Professor Winncy Du, who is Spherical Drive System’s faculty adviser, said she has never seen a senior project like this one.

“It’s very different,” Du said. “They’re going to change the world of the bicycle.”

The team has assertively gained sponsorships, including monetary donations and parts for their vehicle. They have even attended job fairs, not for finding a job but to gain support for their project. Li said at the moment, they could use help in manufacturing molds for the spheres, which are a composite of carbon fibers, fiberglass and synthetic rubber.

Team building

Ratner said their senior project has been a lesson in communication and team building, in addition to gaining technical experience. He encourages students to take initiative with their project ideas.

Parmar added, “We hope students do more unique projects.”

Last March, Ratner and Parmar represented Spherical Drive System in the American Society of Mechanical Engineering’s regional district student competition. Parmar earned first place in the oral competition, and Ratner earned second place in the poster presentation. Parmar will advance to the national competition in Houston this November.

The team devotes hours to this project. Ratner, Li and Parmar estimate they each put in 20 to 30 hours per week on top of school, work and other commitments. Their project deadline is May 16, but they plan to continue working on the motorcycle this summer to get it ready for test riding.

The Indian diaspora, international migration and immigrant workers were a few of the topics discussed at the Immigration Symposium, sponsored by the Silicon Valley Center for Global Studies.

Presenters, including SJSU professors and alumni, spoke at this conference April 12 and 13 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library. This was the fourth symposium within the last five years. This year’s theme was “Immigration: Policy and Reality.”

“The center tries to maintain ongoing discussions about immigration-related issues by hosting conferences and symposiums regularly,” said Yoko Baba, a justice studies professor who coordinated the event. “The symposium attempts to bring academics, practitioners and community members together to have meaningful dialogues and conversations about these issues.”

Andrew Lam, author and editor of New America Media, and Kelly Lytle Hernandez, a history professor at UCLA, provided keynote addresses. Lam recently wrote a collection of personal essays titled “East Eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres.” Hernandez’s book, “MIGRA! A History of the U.S. Border Patrol,” is the first scholarly study of the U.S. Border Patrol, according to the Immigration Symposium program.

“Equal Time,” a School of Journalism and Mass Communications television program, premieres its second season on Saturday, April 28, at 2 p.m. on KQED Plus.

Each episode features in-depth reporting on a single topic and showcases different points of views. The season premiere will focus on people living with autism.

“Autism poses new challenges and questions as persons with the disorder reach adulthood,” according to KQED’s website. “For instance, who will care for them once their parents are no longer living? A murder/suicide in Sunnyvale recently placed the issue front and center.”

Families raising children with autism and representatives from the non-profit Parents Helping Parents will be included in this episode.

Executive producer Diane Guerrazzi, a broadcast journalism professor, leads a class of students responsible for producing, reporting, filming, writing and editing television packages for “Equal Time.” Bob Rucker, director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, is the host and leads a panel discussion that makes up the second half of the program.

Future episodes focusing on graffiti, marijuana clubs and religious expression will air in May on Saturdays at 2 p.m. on KQED Plus, formerly known as KTEH.

To find out more information about the program and its schedule, visit KQED’s website.
