You cheered on the Spartans at the Military Bowl. Now comes the Garlic Bowl!

That’s right! Plan now to support your school at this culinary competition 2 p.m. July 26, opening day for the world-famous Gilroy Garlic Festival.

“We are delighted to create such a formidable match up in the first year of what we anticipate will become a summer tradition,” said festival President Dennis Harrigan.

SJSU will take on Fresno State and the University of California, Berkeley. The winner scores bragging rights plus a $5,000 scholarship.

Dining Commons Head Chef Michele Rogers will lead the Spartans, assisted by a sous chef with at least one kitchen battle under his or her belt.

That’s because the honor will go to the Spartan Shops employee (could be a student!) who wins a May 29 campus cook off (featuring garlic of course!).

“This is not your father’s ‘one-on-one’ battle,” Harrigan said. “This will be a jamboree, where three historic rivals will battle simultaneously on the same field of play.”

Working side-by-side inside the festival’s kitchen theater, each team will have one hour to prepare two dishes, each featuring a whooping six cloves of garlic!

Expect crowds. Over 100,000 people typically attend this three-day festival, noshing on all sorts of garlic-laden goodies, from ice cream to calamari.
