Matt Hovan has a 73.91 career stroke average at San Jose State.

Soon-to-be senior Matthew Hovan is among 156 amateurs vying for a victory at the 100th California State Amateur Championship hosted at Olympic Club, June 20-25.

Hovan made the field after shooting a one-under 69 in a qualifying round at San Jose Country Club on April 18. It will be his fourth time playing at the California State Amateur.

“I’m feeling confident about my game going in,” Hovan said. “I’ve got my teammate Justin Estrada on the bag which was a big help at the qualifier. I want to go up, play well and have a good time.”

The Redwood City native and Serra High graduate has seven career top-20 finishes at San Jose State and had a career-best 73.46 stroke average during the 2010-11 season.

The tournament opens June 20 with 36 holes of stroke play on the Lake and Ocean courses. The top 32 players will advance to four straight days of match play.

“Olympic Club is a classic,” Spartans’ head coach John Kennaday said. “Matt’s length off the tee and outstanding putting make him capable of doing very well in this tournament.”

Hovan’s tee time for the opening round on the Lake Course is at 11:10 a.m. PDT.
