Summary: Provost Gerry Selter invites all faculty, staff and students to the 49th Annual Honors Convocation. Interim President Don W. Kassing, Provost Selter, and the deans will lead the celebration. Nearly 3,000 undergraduate students who earned a GPA of 3.65 or higher in at least two contiguous semesters of the three prior semesters will be eligible to participate.

This year’s convocation speaker will be Los Angeles Times Columnist and alumnus Steve Lopez, who will receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Lopez is the author of three novels and a book of non-fiction, “The Soloist: A Lost Dream, An Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power of Music.” The book is based on columns Lopez wrote about his friendship with a downtown Los Angeles musician. The volume also formed the basis for the 2009 film of the same name starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx.

Formal announcements and invitations have been sent to students. College offices have listings of all who will be honored. In addition, everyone is invited to a reception immediately following the ceremony. Light refreshments will be served. This is a wonderful opportunity for student honorees to introduce their families and friends to faculty and staff who have been influential in their academic achievements.

Our honorees greatly value faculty and staff participation at this very special event. Faculty members are strongly encouraged to wear academic regalia and march in the opening processional, meeting no later than 5:45 p.m. in the Event Center Aerobics Room. Faculty and staff without academic regalia will be seated in a special section. If you have any questions, please contact Jessica Larsen at (408) 924-2400.
