Francisco Javier De La Torre

’12 Justice Studies

“I saw the other side of the law—not just law enforcement.”

De La Torre, the first college graduate in his family, didn’t stop at a bachelor’s degree. After working with SJSU’s Record Clearance Project, he decided to pursue a career in law, a decision that stunned his parents, he admits. “But after taking the RCP course, I saw how I could use the law to help people.” Since 2008, the Record Clearance Project has provided an opportunity for SJSU undergrads to advocate for low-income individuals who, with their criminal records expunged, have a much better chance of getting jobs and living productive lives.
