After three years of interning at various physical therapy clinical settings, in October 2014 I had the pleasure of attending the California Physical Therapy Association Annual Conference. Similar to Kinesiology, I learned that Physical Therapy is an interdisciplinary field that enhances the rehabilitation of human beings and the experience gained through movement.

Walking through the exhibition halls, I saw various forms of technology to enhance patient treatment such as biomechanical sensors, tablet applications, and exercise equipment with interactive screens. Researchers presented studies beyond the traditional medical model that engages evidence-based practice while bringing in other knowledge bases such as motor learning and pharmacology to effectively treat a patient. Most importantly, speakers emphasized the close human interaction between a PT and patient where sociological and psychological connections play a role in building genuine rapport. Whether practicing in an outpatient clinic or ICU, this must be achieved while being mindful of one’s emotions and actions as a health practitioner.

As I prepare to apply to graduate school, I feel thankful for the opportunity to explore the expanding role of physical therapists. Their impact on the moving health of a fellow human being makes me proud to be a student of Kinesiology.
