SJSU Theatre Arts to produce a new Cheever play next semester

“JOHN CHEEVER’S THE SWIMMER & OTHER SUBURBAN STORIES

By Matthew Spangler

Based on short stories by Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Cheever

This stage play is based on four of Cheever’s most famous and frequently anthologized stories (“O Youth and Beauty,” “The Death of Justina,” “The Wrysons,”  and “The Swimmer”) highly praised for their blend of realism and surrealism and their thematic exploration of suburban America, especially the relationship between wealth and happiness.   Known as “The Chekov of the suburbs,” John Cheever has inspired some of the most popular and critically acclaimed contemporary works, such as MAD MEN, AMERICAN BEAUTY, and THE SIMPSONS.

Award winning playwright Matthew Spangler’s previous adaptations of THE KITE RUNNER and TORTILLA CURTAIN were also developed and produced at San Jose State University before going on to theatres around the country.
