Presentation Title: Information and Education Application in Virtual Environments

Presenter(s): Shannon Broden

Abstract: As people become more accustomed to the idea of virtual environments being able to be used more than just a way to play games as part of everyday life, they are finding a place in the educational sector as well. Shannon Broden will walk through her participation through San Jose State University’s Virtual Center for Archives and Records Administration (VCARA) in the Fall 2023 Second Life Student Challenge hosted by the Virtual Worlds Education Consortium. This will include how she developed the exhibit she designed, the ways in which a virtual world can be used to teach and convey information with interactivity, and how effective the results seemed to be based on competition judging by a given rubric designed by the Virtual Worlds Education Consortium. Broden then discusses the implications and relevance of the use of virtual worlds to help discover information and teach educational concepts in non-traditional spaces such as libraries and classrooms.

Fantastic job Shannon! Understanding and using virtual spaces effectively for teaching and learning, and designing exhibits or immersive experiences, is more of a challenge than most people know. Your presentation really illustrates the benefits and the value gained from your work. I agree working with a team is great, but I’m so glad you learned as much as you did working on your own. Well done!
