Presentation Title: Beauty Bytes: Social Media in Digital Literacy and Information Community Behavior

Presenter(s): Sydney Salinda

Abstract: The rise of online beauty communities has transformed the way individuals seek and engage with beauty information. These communities, fueled by content creators and social media platforms, provide a dynamic space for knowledge exchange, peer-to-peer support, and the dissemination of beauty trends. However, the proliferation of digital misinformation within these communities poses a significant challenge, potentially leading to misinformed beauty practices and adverse health outcomes. Library and information science (LIS) professionals can play a crucial role in addressing this challenge by adopting a serious leisure perspective and recognizing the significance of online beauty communities as information communities. Through collaboration with beauty content creators, LIS professionals can develop effective strategies to combat misinformation, promote evidence-based practices, and enhance digital literacy among beauty enthusiasts. This paper explores the intersection of online beauty communities, content creators, digital misinformation, information professionals, information communities, the serious leisure perspective, and LIS. It emphasizes the need for LIS professionals to engage with the online beauty community, fostering partnerships with content creators to promote credible information sources, critical evaluation skills, and responsible information sharing practices. By bridging the gap between the beauty industry and the LIS profession, we can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their beauty choices and safeguard their well-being.
