Marco Meniketti to Take Part in UCSC Symposium on Emerging Ecologies: Archaeologies of Slavery, Landscape and Environmental Change

Anthropology professor Marco Meniketti will be speaking at a symposium on May 4 at UC Santa Cruz’s Archaeological Research Center. The annual conference theme is “Emerging Ecologies: Archaeologies of Slavery, Landscape and Environmental Change.” Way to go, Dr. Meniketti!

Jennifer Anderson Speaks on the Function of Japanese Tea Bowls

Anthropology professor Jennifer Anderson will be giving a lecture on Monday, April 23 at 6:00 pm entitled “The Function of Japanese Tea Bowls.” Professor Anderson is an expert on the topic and has been recognized globally for her work on the topic. It’s time to celebrate another year of CommUniverCity!

On Wednesday, April 25, 5:00–7:30 p.m., we will come together to showcase some of CommUniverCity’s banner community projects and recognize remarkable people who have gone above and beyond to give back to our communities.

The event will be fair-style with interactive project stations led by San José State University faculty and students in partnership with community members. Come to eat some delicious tacos catered by a neighborhood business, win prizes that include an iPad, and meet the community members who ensure the success of our projects. Awards will be presented from 6:30-7:15 p.m.

Natalie Baszile

The Center for Literary Arts and the SJSU African-American Studies Department present Natalie Baszile: Reading & Conversation with Selena Anderson.

Natalie Baszile is the author of the Southern debut novel Queen Sugar, which has been adapted for television by writer and director Ava DuVernay and co-produced by Oprah Winfrey. Queen Sugar was named one of the San Francisco Chronicle‘s Best Books of 2014 and nominated for the NAACP Image Award. Natalie also writes nonfiction, which has appeared in Lenny Letter, O, The Oprah Magazine, and The Best Women’s Travel Writing, Volume 9.

Womens Rights in Contemporary Armenian Society: Between Modernization and Traditions

The SJSU Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program presents Dr. Gohar Shahnazaryan, speaking on Womens Rights in Contemporary Armenian Society: Between Modernization and Traditions.

Dr. Gohar Shahnazaryan, is the Director of Yerevan State University Center for Gender and Leadership Studies and the Co-Director of Women’s Resource Center NGO in Armenia. She holds a PhD in Sociology and is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Sociology at YSU. In 2008, 2009 and 2011 for one semester each year she has been a visiting scholar at the Institute of Slavic, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies at UC Berkeley through Open Society Institute Fellowship.
