Professor Doyle was an avid world traveler.

On Friday, September 12th, COMM Center faculty joined members of the Communication Studies Department and the Doyle family in the Spartan Memorial Chapel to mourn the loss of our dear colleague, Professor Shannon Doyle.

Professor Doyle was twice an alumna (B.A. & M.A.) of the Communication Studies department, a dedicated teacher, and an enthusiastic member of the COMM Center faculty, where she helped mentor upper-division COMM Center Coaches and all students enrolled in COMM 80 workshops. Her cheerful demeanor and easy smile will long be remembered as will her many contributions to the COMM Center and the Communication Studies Department.

Communication Studies Department Chair Dr. Deanna Fassett announced that the department will honor her memory by naming the study abroad scholarships after her. Professor Doyle was an avid world traveler, as well as a poet and scholar.

SJSU COMM Center Readies Students for the Semester

COMM 80 students attend an orientation facilitated by COMM Center Coaches.

It’s a brand new semester this fall and we at the San José State University Communication Center aim to help SJSU students with their educational needs. Our coaches, writing consultants, and peer advisors are ready to welcome and help all SJSU students who seek out our assistance with academic writing, public speaking, and general communication skills.

Last week, the Communication Center opened its doors with a new cast of Coaches, Writing Consultants, and Peer Advisors, but it was the COMM 80 students who had the busiest opening week. Our coaches introduced the COMM 80 students to Canvas, workshops, and modules that would prepare them for various Communication Studies courses.

We also had our first workshop of the year on Thursday, September 11th, teaching one of the most fundamental skills for university work. The APA Styles Citation workshop had our coaches teach the basics of APA style citations with hands on activities and informational handouts.

This is only the beginning of the year and we expect an influx of students into the Communication Center looking for help and we will be there to offer not just a helping hand, but our undivided attention as well.
