COMM Lecturer Interviewed on Fox Business

Dr. Kathy Werking, COMM lecturer and small business owner, was interviewed recently on the Fox Business program Spare Change. Werking developed an ingenious Kentucky fried chicken candle that has struck a positive chord with consumers. Her store, Kentucky Green Studio, features jewelry, natural lotions, and soy wax candles she and her family create. Werking teaches online courses such as communication and gender (COMM 176P) and qualitative methods (COMM 156I) for the department. She earned her Ph.D. in communication and M.A. in mass communication from Purdue University.

Professor Morella-Pozzi Publishes Critical Autoethnography

Kudos to Professor Dana Morella-Pozzi on the publication of her essay “The (Dis)ability Double Life: Exploring the Terrible Dichotomy of (Il)Legitimacy in Higher Education.”
Professor Morella-Pozzi’s chapter is part of a new collection, Critical autoethnography: Intersecting cultural identities in everyday life (2013) edited by Robin M. Boylorn and Mark P. Orbe, published by Left Coast Press. Check out the book here.

Dr. Spangler’s New Play Featured in the Mercury News

Congratulations to Dr. Matthew Spangler on the opening of his play at the Arabian Shakespeare Festival. The San Jose Mercury News features a front page article on Dr. Spangler’s new play adaptation, A Message, adapted from Kuwaiti playwright Hussain Al Musalam’s play of the same name. The article includes an interview with Dr. Spangler.
A Message runs through November 17 at the Royce Gallery in San Francisco. Produced by the Arabian Shakespeare Festival.

COMM Center Receives Tutor Certification from NACC

The San José State University Communication Center’s tutor training program is now certified by the National Association of Communication Centers.

In the award letter the NACC officers noted the COMM Center tutor training program (for mentors and coaches) is “purposeful and mindful of oral communication; we believe that you have a solid foundation for your coaches. Your ongoing training and reflection activities
are particularly impressive.”
