Dr. Spangler Speaking at Irish Literary and Historical Society

Dr. Matthew Spangler will speak on the topic “Staging Intercultural Ireland: New Plays and Practitioner Perspectives.” This talk will be based on Spangler’s new book, a collection of plays, interviews, and scholarly essays, titled Staging Intercultural Ireland: New Plays and Practitioner Perspectives (co-edited with Dr. Charlotte McIvor of NUI Galway; published by Cork University Press).

Dr. Spangler will talk about the impact of the Celtic Tiger era in Ireland (1995-2007) on recent Irish theatre. These 12 years  saw a dramatic increase in the number of transnational migrants entering the country and Irish theatre has responded in a dramatic way to the presence of Ireland’s new immigrant communities.

The talk is November 23, at the UICC  St Francis Room at 4:30pm.

COMM Department Mourns Loss of Professor Doyle

By Monica Peck

(San Jose, Calif.) — On Friday, September 12th, COMM Center faculty joined members of the Communication Studies Department and the Doyle family in the Spartan Memorial Chapel to mourn the loss of our dear colleague, Professor Shannon Doyle.

Professor Doyle was twice an alumna (B.A. & M.A.) of the Communication Studies department, a dedicated teacher, and an enthusiastic member of the COMM Center faculty, where she helped mentor upper-division COMM Center Coaches and all students enrolled in COMM 80 workshops. Her cheerful demeanor and easy smile will long be remembered as will her many contributions to the COMM Center and the Communication Studies Department.

Communication Studies Department Chair Dr. Deanna Fassett announced that the department will honor her memory by naming the study abroad scholarships after her. Professor Doyle was an avid world traveler, as well as a poet and scholar.

From the publisher:

The Celtic Tiger era witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of transnational migrants entering Ireland. By the 2011 Census, 17% of the population was born outside Ireland and much of what had been assumed about Irish identity–and theatre–could no longer hold. This groundbreaking anthology brings together six interviews and eight plays by migrant and Irish-born theatre artists who probe the impact of inward-migration and interculturalism in post-1990s Ireland. The interviews and plays collected here, all available in print for the first time, model a range of devising strategies, dramaturgical frameworks, and literary forms. To date, the work documented here has been produced at a wide range of venues from the Abbey Theatre and New York’s La MaMa Experimental Theatre to mid-sized theatre companies, community centers, street theatres, and even refugee accommodation centers throughout Ireland. This book represents established as well as emerging theatre artists and includes work by Donal O’Kelly, Bisi Adigun, Charlie O’Neill, Rosaleen McDonagh, Paul Meade, Nicola McCartney, Ursula Rani Sarma, and Mirjana Rendulic. Additionally, there are interviews with Bairbre Ní Chaoimh, Anna Wolf, Kasia Lech, John Currivan, Alicja Ayres, José Miguel Jimenéz, Declan Gorman, Declan Mallon, and John Scott. Staging Intercultural Irelandoffers a snapshot of Ireland’s long-term intercultural process in its early stages and contributes to transnational migration studies and intercultural theatre research in a global context.

Kudos to Dr. Spangler!

COMM Social Media Featured in SJSU Report

Kudos to Dr. Ted Coopman and his COMM Social Media Team! The university’s August report on retention and graduation initiatives sent to the CSU Chancellor’s Office highlighted two new features in the COMM Central Network, Campus Services on the COMM Central Canvas site and recent additions to the COMM YouTube Channel.

Here’s what was included in the report. Check it out!

COMM 111P (Interviewing students) researched and reported on various services on campus. Professor Stephanie Coopman edited those reports this summer and they now are posted on the department’s online homeroom, COMM Central. Here’s the link.

Communication Studies also has a YouTube channel to which we’ve been steadily adding content, such as the Meet a Major Video Series, the 2014 COMM graduation, and brief informational videos about SJSU that we added this summer, such as SJSU Studies. Here’s the link.
