The third annual Health Services Administration Mixer and Professional Panel event at San José State University took place on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 from 4-6:00pm at the Engineering Building, Room 285. This event was led and organized by Dr. Van Ta Park, Assistant Professor and Health Services Administration Concentration Coordinator, as well as the Health Services Administration Student Committee from the Department of Health Science. The three student leaders of the committee were Mitchica Bose, Christopher Cardema and Jerick Caballero.
The Health Services Administration Professional Panel allowed Health Science students and alumni, particularly those in the department’s Health Services Administration
concentration (Option 4), to gain important and helpful information on health services administration from professionals in the field. The panel discussion provided insight into the panelists’ backgrounds, training and experience and touched on current trends in the panelists’ fields of expertise. Panelists also provided descriptive information on the organizations they represented including internship opportunities (Option 4 students are required to complete 200 hours of an internship during their last semester). Students also had the opportunity to pose questions to the panelists that informed their study and career planning.
We had the following panelists at our event:
- Peter Long, PhD, CEO and President of Blue Shield of California Foundation
- Alissa Shaw, MLA, Director of Programs for the Pacific Stroke Association
- Christopher Cherney, MPH, Assistant Administrator of Kaiser Permanente Post-Acute Care Center
- Adara Beamesderfer, Health Science alumni (B.S., Health Services Administration), and Research Assistant for Women’s Health Policy and KaiserEDU, Kaiser Family Foundation
The room was packed with more than 110 persons in attendance including students, alumni, and faculty! Many students and alumni have commented on how valuable this experience has been for them!
